Hong Kong (4/26 - 5/10): Nobody Here But Us Rock Stars

With everyone out of town, it was pretty much just Boon and I at the office.  SiuButDim would come in as well and the two of us had scheduled a series of interviews with several of the bands that would be performing in the upcoming "Let's Fight" concert.

April 25 - Seasons Lee

Our first interview was with Seasons Lee.  For those of you who don't know him, Seasons is an independent rock artist who travels between Hong Kong and Taiwan performing shows.  The interviews were mainly me holding a video camera while SiuButDim talked to the person, but I managed to snap some photos too.

Seasons was a pretty nice guy.  A little soft-spoken, but you could tell he really loved his music.

After interviewing Seasons over at his studio in MongKok, SBD and I headed to a small restaurant called "My Place" which had excellent food.  But pretty soon it was time for our second interview ...

I'll say this for him ... boy's got skillz

April 25 - Paul Wong

Yes, Paul Wong, the man himself.  He's actually pretty famous here in Hong Kong (and in certain circles around the world).  He's known as the "Godfather of HK Rock" and is sort of a cross between Mick Jagger and Eddie VanHalen.  Well, ... not exactly .. but you get the idea.  His guitar playing is incredible.

He had a super nice studio and was very friendly.  The interview with him lasted about an hour and then we headed back to MongKok where I caught a bus home.

The next interview was a few days later.  If I didn't have interviews during the day I spent my time at the office working.  So, just assume that all the days between interviews are relatively boring.

April 28 - Family

We headed back over to MongKok.  first we met up for dinner at "My Place" and then headed to the studio for "Family", which was actually right close to Season's studio.

There are 7 members of family (3 vocal, 4 instrumental) and after the interview I sat in the studio a bit while they played a song.  It was a couple more days before I got my hearing back ...

It wouldn't be a narom blog entry without a picture of food

May 1 - KingLyChee

Before meeting the band, SBD, Boon and I ate at a restaurant right around the corner from their studio.  The food was AMAZING.  Especially the roast bird.  Gotta go back there sometime ...

The interview itself was sans Boon, but we got to catch a bit of their rehearsal first.  Then we sat down with the band members and SBD interviewed while I video taped.  They were really nice folks.  You can check out their profile page here on alive not dead.

May 2 - Sonic Temple

We grabbed a bus from Sheung Wan and made our way back to Paul Wong's studio.  His brother was in the band Sonic Temple so we were on our way to interview them for the site.

Before the interview we stopped by a little alleyway with a Japanese restaurant that was quite delicious.  SBD really knows the good places to eat in HK.

The band was nice and the interview came and went.  It was fun hanging out at the posh studio of Paul Wong.  Really wish I could have played around with some of the instruments.  I'm very out of practice these days.

Paul Wong's brother. Can you believe he's over 40?

Other Stuff

There were some other interviews (Ryan Hui and Tats Lau) which I wasn't able to attend, but it was all really just work as usual.  This all happened almost a month ago now, so it's hard to remember the details, but all this work basically led up to the "Let's Fight" concert, which I have already blogged about.  Be sure to read about that event and I will continue to work on getting my blog updated to the "present" time ...
