I’m old school like that.

[Bonus: Nice interview with MJ at the 4:00 mark!]

I like all kinds of music. From Dylan to Alicia Keys. The Who, Van Halen. Bowie, Lou Reed. Joni, James. Bo Diddley and Chuck. Mississippi John Hurt and Nina. Sinatra, Barry. 2Pac, Nas. I dig Lady A’s new song “Heart Break” too. Beck, Nirvana, Roots, Mayer (his latest album incredible). It goes on and on for me. I’m sure it does for you, too.

But MJ was and still is just on a whole other level. His vulnerability juxtaposed with his inner strength. He was a skinny dude, just like me. I’m sure he had so many insecurities. He persisted. He persevered. His Mom raised him right.

MJ is lip syncing here, but it doesn’t matter. This is a gem to me. Who was he singing to specifically? Rumor has it he was dating Tatum O'Neal (Bad News Bears)...

Wasn’t a huge radio hit. Certainly not “Shake Your Body” level of recognition. A deep cut as the saying goes.

Real strings. Zero autotune. Just pure Michael. Just before Off the Wall. His falsetto was pure gold. I love it when he goes from “Don’t you know...” to “the real you and me” in his chest voice, with the slightest grind on the word “real” - the fragility, and then his inner strength to overcome. It’s all there. It’s so good. He was 20 years old.

Long live the King of Pop.
