Just my random thought of the day.

You'd think that as a lawyer I'd know this, but I wonder if the new anti-smoking legislation here in HK makes any distinction between smoking (as in putting a cigarette to your lips and puffing) and the simple act of lighting a cigarette indoors?

There is some relevance to my question.  I saw some dailies from a photoshoot yesterday where the model was called upon to evoke a 1930s Shanghai look, and she was holding a cigarette rather rakishly in her hand.  Problem was, of course, it wasn't lit as the shoot was taking place in a cafe.  But the effect of the photo was lost, IMO.  It's not quite the same when the model is holding what is basically a dead white stick.  You need to ash and smoke for it to come alive.

Funny I'd say this since I don't smoke, but hey.

    Smoking kills, kids!

    And stay in school!

haha....so you ARE a lawyer. Checked it out for ya - figured it would be good pub quiz knowledge too!

The new legislation bans both smoking and carrying a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe. But carrying a lit cigarette for a photo shoot would likely fall under the exemption of  doing the smoking act for filming...that is if certain requirements (which mainly requires the photo to not advertise or promote smoking or the cigarette brand) are met. (see s2(3) and schedule 5 of the smoking (public health) ordinance and s2(1) film (censorship) ordinance)

    Hope that satisfies your curiosity!

I can honestly say first time I smoke was...salmon :-) I actually remember seeing people light up their cigarette while top off their gasoline for their car. Apparently, gasoline wasn't flammable in the 80s :-(

I'm old enough to remember when you could smoke in school...

I guess photoshop for the smoke?
