Snowboarding in Yabuli

6 years ago, I took snowboarding classes during my senior year in college and loved it. Ever since then, I've wanted to go snowboarding in China, and I finally made it happen a few weeks ago. Here is an article I published about my trip to Yabuli, the best ski resort in China. The bottom line: highly recommended if you are a ski/snow buff. Here are a few pictures that didn't make the cut:

2009 China Surf Open!

After waiting for months, I finally held my surf contest over the New Year's holiday weekend. What a great last minute call! A lot of people were already busy with NYE plans, but we jam packed a small bus full of people, dj equipment, booze, and headed to the beach in time to set up for New Years Eve. After drinking, dancing, mixing, and stumbling until 3AM, we crashed and woke up for a full day of surfing on the first day of 2010. With a free flow of beer, tunes on the beach all day, plenty of waves and wipeouts, and everyone in go...Read more

Hiking/Camping/Surfing with an iPhone

A famous photographer, Chase Jarvis, recently published a book called The Best Camera, in which all photos were shot with an iPhone. He says basically says the best camera is the one you have with you. I found myself approaching last weekend without a camera, so I decided to make the most of my iPhone as a photographic tool. Here are the results:

Searching for Surf

During the National Holiday, I set out with a mission: find surf along the coast of Fujian. With a typhoon approaching, it was the perfect time. I used google maps to find a few places which I thought might have surf, and set out to find them. The first place turned out to be Jinmen, a Taiwanese island just off the coast from Xiamen that was bombed by China in 1949. It was fascinating, and when I found my first wave after lugging my surfboard all over the hell of Chinese buses, taxies, ferries, and motorbikes, it was well worth the effort. ...Read more

Surfing in Hainan

If you want to find some truly beautiful places in Hainan, get out of Sanya and head up the east coast. There, you'll find deserted beaches with mountainous backdrops and good waves. Here are a few pictures from my various surf trips down there in the past year.

Beach party coming soon

I am super excited about a beach party I am organizing with my friends (& spinning as well). It'll be the first big beach party of the year here in Shenzhen. We did one last year, and despite only announcing the party one day in advance, got about 35 people (mostly good friends) to come and had the party of the summer. Never mind the fact we lost several hundred yuan; it was all good. This time we are doing things a little different, that is, planning and putting the word out a month in advance. But we are still keeping the co...Read more

Most Interesting Photos

I've been a member of Flickr, a fantastic photo hosting and sharing community, for about 4 years now. In that time I've amassed about 5,000 images there. Flickr has a feature which determines your " most interesting" photos based on views, comments, notes, favorites, etc. Some of the choices are a total surprise, and some are not at all. Here are my top five photos, as d...Read more

Surfing in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's annual surf contest was held last November at the beautiful Tai Long Wan in Sai Kung. Being completely addicted to surfing, of course I could not pass it up. It was also a great chance to hike into the beach and camp out for a few nights. The weather was beautiful every day and the waves were pretty good too. All in all, another spectacular weekend at probably the most beautiful beach in South China.
