  • News from the Kongkrete Studio: “Feel you” by Chacha ft. Olivia (RYC Dubstep Edit)

    Thursday, Nov 19, 2009 5:19PM / Members only

Shanghai meets Hong Kong… Check out the latest remix project by Kongkretebass’ RYC (aka DJ Wash) for Shanghai based MC/Singer/Producer ChaCha.

RYC and ChaCha first met in 2008 through various performances for the Sub-Culture and Uprooted Sunshine crews in Shanghai. Chacha – who has recently featured on a release for Kode9 on the Hyberdub label – impresses with her vocal abilities as a singer/MC as well in her own music productions.

Having a chance to do a remix of one of ChaCha’s own production, RYC snapped up the idea of “Feel you” and worked his remix magic turning the track into a moody, emotion-filled dubstep roller.

RYC (DJ Wash) Dubstep Edit of “Feel You” by ChaCha (Uprooted Sunshine/Shanghai, China) featuring vocals by Olivia.

    About Distance:
    http://www.myspace.com/djdistancedub

Part of the small nucleus of South London based Dubstep innovators, Distance has been a name on everyone’s lips since day one, and is widely recognized as having helped to lay the foundations of what dubstep is and develop what it has become. Fostering a unique sound, Distance as producer, DJ and label owner has been pushing things in a direction all of his own. Gathering early support from the legendary John Peel and going on to be part of the utterly seminal Dubstep Warz show on Radio 1 presented by Mary Anne Hobbs, Distance has forged a name for himself as a critical figure in the scene.

As a stalwart of the all the biggest dubstep raves (DMZ, FWD and Exodus) and with bookings notched up around the world, he is very much at the forefront of the scene and in high demand. From deep to devastating in one dubplate switch up, Distance truly knows how to tear up the dance. No one does it like him. If you’re thinking about booking Distance, make sure your soundsystem hardware is punching well above the weight required for most club music. His dubplate selection will give even the most bass battered set ups a full performance check.

Distance’s recorded output is also formidable, finding homes on labels as underground and seminal as Hotflush, Destructive and Boka in his early career, to ending up on the world reputed Planet Mu, on which Distance released his debut album in 2007. Also that year he started his own stable, Chestplate. A label set up with the intention of showcasing the freshest of his own productions which have been destroying dances and flooring radio listeners ever since. After just a handful of releases it is already established as one of the increasingly few, ‘buy-on-sight’ dubstep labels. The onslaught looks set to continue with the recent announcement of a second full length album for the unstoppable Planet Mu label.

Highlights of his production repertoire include ‘V’; a track as heavy as 100 ten tonne trucks that pounds and stomps, crunches and growls. It has torn up dancefloors worldwide since it’s dubplate debut and is a perfect example of a track that showcases Distance’s fraught and angry production style. Conversely another Distance classic, ‘Feel Me’, oozes something far less overtly aggressive; all motorik hypnotik groove and ring modulated synth squeel. Distance’s studio has spawned multiple stone cold killers over a range of styles but all uniquely Distance, highlighting why his new releases are some of the most highly anticipated in the scene.

    About Camo and Krooked:

When “one of the biggest talents in Drum’n’Bass” (according to Grooverider), Vienna based Reinhard Rietsch aka CAMO and up- and coming producer Markus Wagner aka KROOKED, who both started producing in 2002, teamed up in 2007 nobody could have guessed what impact their collaboration will have on the scene.

Since then they have written and produced some of the hottest and devastating dancefloor anthems Drum’n’Bass has heard for a long time! Be it the more soulful sound of the massive “Tonight” or the raw power of smashers like “Dakota” (both released on MAINFRAME Rec.) they always hit the right buttons.

With this amazing musical talent and ambition they quickly managed to get their tunes released on the biggest Labels within the scene and on heavy rotation on Drum’n’Bass’ homebase Radio 1.

Top-notch Labels like Renegade Hardware, Viper Recordings , Technique, Uprising, Sudden Def, Mainframe Recordings and many more are standing in row to get the next CAMO & KROOKED tune released! Fortunately they don’t have to wait long. When listening to their already huge discography, one luckily recognizes that quantity doesn’t exclude quality in the world of CAMO & KROOKED. They apparently finish a tune a day, with just killers, no fillers! And with more releases in the pipeline coming out on Hospital, Breakbeat Kaos, Beta, Audio Porn not to forget their massive “Vampires VIP” featured on the “Drum & Bass Arena – Anthems 2009” Compilation, CAMO & KROOKED aren’t intending to leave this highly effective path.

As if producing tremendous tunes of every subgenre Drum’n’Bass has to offer isn’t enough, they’re also exploring completely different styles of electronic music like the exciting sounds of minimal house and relaxing downtempo beats with their so called CHROME project. Expect different sounds and same quality.

With such an amount of studio work it’s quite an effort to still find time to do regular DJ Gigs all over Europe. But still they do! And if you ever get the chance to catch them in a club near you, grab your best pair of dancing shoes and go for it. The hottest dubplates and some heavy double-drop business won’t even give you a chance not to move until it hurts.

So be prepared to get mental with the sound of CAMO & KROOKED!

    About Doshy:

Doshy started with digtial mediums in 1999, after a lot of influence from sc-fi books & films, and 80s and 90s electro music.. He became heavily inspired by creating art in a digital- future way, and serious in developing future electronic music. He´s focus on digital mediums is because his guiding principle is : “Try to make future-art, not retro-art, todays retro-art are in a way wrong because these art were a view into the future at their time. Take the influences and form it into new ideas .”

At this moment, Doshy is at the forerunner of the up and coming Berlin scene; dubstep and electronic producers inspired by the city’s vibrant clubscene, yet bored with the static of it’s oversaturated retro minimal obsession.

Hailing from friendly South Bavaria(Augsburg), where he produced some breakcore for PeaceOFF and wonky techno for Bombtrap, Doshy moved to Berlin, and became heavily inspired by the young new artists’ digital, forward thinking productions.

Locked into his studio all winter 2008 with his trusty Korg MS10,and wired old arp-synth plugins. he created a lot of tunes and they are just the start of Doshy’s ongoing musical evolution.

His music is the missing link between Mr. Oizo’s “Flatbeat”, Subhead, old Neil Landstrumm and current UK bassbinshifters like Zomby, Hyperdub, Starkey, Rustie and Kanji Kinetic. His tunes are funky, massive dancefloor stompers with massive futurebass and partysounds from outerspace.

  • KONGKAST #102 – Drum n’ Bass label showcase ft. Mako & Utopia Music (UK)

    Friday, Nov 6, 2009 11:31AM / Members only

This week KONGKAST presents you an ultra special showcase mix from one of our favorite new labels – the Bristol based UTOPIA MUSIC (UK) – represented by label owner/Dj/producer MAKO.

Since our first encounter with Mako in 2006, after a smashing gig for the Hong Kong headz, Kongkretebass has become an early supporter of his music and his cause. With tunes like “In The Raw” and “Connexion” getting regular air play at our local gigs and on Kongkast, not to mention the success these tracks celebrated with airplay on BBC’s Radio One shows.

The Utopia Music label has evolved from a vision with the hugely successful Bristol club night/ charity event called ‘Utopia’, hosting the scene’s high profile deejays/producers all for a good cause.

Utopia Music’s debut in September earlier this year features Break – Natural Progression as well as Mako & Mute – In The Raw (D Bridge Remix) on the flip side. With a debut release already supported by LTJ Bukem, Doc Scott, Fierce, Makoto, Bailey, Loxy, Total Science, SpectraSoul, DJ Lee, Flight, Instra:mental, Survival just to name a few, Utopia Music looks promising to be making a lot of noise in the coming years! So keep your eyes peeled for more big releases from this fresh label.

Many thanks to Mako / Utopia Music (UK) for this exclusive set for KONGKAST #102. Read more about his story below.

Get on the download… crank up the volume and enjoy!

About UTOPIA MUSIC / Mako (UK):

    What’s your story?
We did a charity night called Utopia in 2007 with the help of local boys Dissident. It was a great success and the night was surrounded by a feeling of overwhelming love for each other. The label started from this point and now I’m under an ongoing influence by a beautiful family of friends all making music. I believe more people could hear the sonic winds coming from this direction . I could help that process. D Bridge, Fierce, Break and Squire of Dnaudio/Resolute amongst other lovelies, have been massively helpful in helping me with my vision.

    Inspirations:
Kittens, Pre 99 Dillinja bass and beats, pre-1999 Photek beats. ?Mother nature.

    Weapons of choice:
Kittens and french mountain studio sessions with my brothers Mute.
Sampling, Valve compression and mackie desk crunching.

    Proudest moment to date:
The next few hours i’ll try and describe was amazing for me…I had finished making a tune with Andsyskopes (of Good Looking fame) called ‘In the Raw’, then played it to Fierce when I got back from London, Fierce then gave it to Bailey within a few minutes, then we listened to the Radio One Xtra show later that night sitting on Fierce’s sofa with Dave Blade from the Sect listening to Bailey play it and giving it a rewind. Fabio playing ‘Connexion’ by me and the brothers Mute on Radio 1 comes a close second. Both of these tunes will be able to be downloaded for free when anyone becomes part of the website family (www.utopiamusic.org). D Bridge has remixed ‘In the Raw’ for the first release and the Sect have just finished doing a great job of remixing ‘Connexion’. Linden has done a VIP mix too which will also be available as a download.

What’s best way to get on in life?
Accept. A lot of people mistake the attitude of acceptance for one of fatalism ‘What will be will be; there’s nothing I can do about it’.
That is the mind of stagnation. Life is dynamic and changing. The way of accepting life is to take life as it comes – but take it. Let anything and everything be your source of absorption. If we deeply absorb ourselves, then all thinking is forgotten and we feel how beautiful life can be. Awaken to the truth, how and where do not matter. I think having animals around helps too. I believe my cats are Zen masters, perfectors of stillness and living in the moment. I also think we have a responsibillity to ourselves and each other to reduce our negative and destructive emotions. By that I don’t mean by doing more recycling, or protesting wars. I just believe we could be more loving to ourselves and each other on a day-to-day localised level. Our emotional affect on each other is a very basic and underlying principal of everything that goes on in the world. If that principle was born out of love rather than anger or hate, then the world could feel more alive to us all.

    What’s your poison?
Can I have two please? Fruity bud and homemade cake.

    What’s your ideal night out?
I never go out, i’m hermit boy…its just me and the family, the studio and the kittens at the moment :) If I do venture out its to try out demos of beats on soundsystems or visiting the Mute guys in France where snowboarding and studio sessions are the order of most moments.

    What does the future hold?
Utopia Music, the record label, will be landing in the late autumn of 09, with the first release being Break – Natural Progression and a D Bridge remix of ‘In the Raw’, promo’s on teh 3rd, full release on the 23rd. Following that we have Survival, The Sect, Madcap (also part of the Good Looking family) and PLK, recent signed to Renegade Hardware, flexing his Utopian vibes. More collaborations with these artists will follow, and my own personal journey with making beats will also continue.
