Born in Hong Kong ‘a long time ago,’ Jamaster A has been at the forefront of Asian dance music since he can remember. Having originally studied fashion design, he quickly got turned on to US disco and funk in the mid-80s and was further inspired by the late John Peel’s seminal BBC Radio One show. After spinning at long-gone local venues such as Hollywood East and Taipan, the 1990s rolled around and he was soon producing tracks for Cantopop legends such as Andy Lau, Sandy Lam, Grasshopper and Softhard. He quickly grew tired of that world, and began producing his own dance music by releasing tracks and remixing others on various fast-selling mixes such as  Hollywood East: Star Tracks, which eventually sold over four million cassettes worldwide. His big break as a solo producer came in 2005 with the now classic trance record  Bells of Tiananmen, which was followed up two years later by  Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (Heart of Asia), remixed by Paul Oakenfold. Earlier this year he released a full-length LP entitled  The Art of Asia. We caught up with him over some prawns and noodles for a quick-fire Q&A. By  Oliver Clasper

What’s the most memorable set you have ever played?

Ministry of Sound in London in 2009. I played alongside Judge Jules and Richard Durand. That set I really, really enjoyed because the crowd was totally different to that in Asia.

What’s the worst memory you have as a DJ?

I really can’t think about the worst one. It hasn’t all been perfect, but normally when I go to play I enjoy myself. Only sometimes when the equipment’s fucked up – but that’s not my responsibility.

Which one dance track would you play to someone who had no experience of the genre?

Giorgio Moroder’s  Chase. When I first listened to this track I told myself I wanted to be a music producer. When I listen to this track it still inspires me a lot.

What three records would you not leave home without?

Soft Cell,  Silence  by Delirium, and the third one is really hard [laughs]. Okay, the first vinyl I ever bought:  Happy Birthday  by Altererd Images.Which DJ have you always wanted to play alongside?

Tiesto.Most memorable club in Hong Kong?

Hollywood East.

Best club in the world you’ve played in?

London’s Ministry of Sound. The crowd is totally different there, always wanting to dance and party.

Club you’d most like to play in?

Amnesia in Ibiza.

Main difference between the dance music scene in Hong Kong and in Europe?

The mentality of Hong Kong people. Here promoters just like to fight each other, and only think about themselves.

What luxury item would you bring on a desert island?

My wife and my son.
