“Shinjuku Incident”,the new crime drama directed by Derek Yee(One
Night in Mongkok)starring
Jackie Chan, was screened three times in its uncut Category III version atthe33rdHong
Kong International Film Festival, first at the opening of the festival, on
March 22nd, 2009, and then on March 30th.
For the very first screening, I noticed that the movie was showed simultanously
in two theaters at the HK Convention & Exhibition Centre, a big one,
and a smaller one. The ticket I bought online some weeks before (because I was
not sure to have a free ticket from the festival as press: Read this) was for
the smaller theater (theater 2).
Miraculously, I could actually have a free ticket for the big theater
through the HKTDC (more exactly, through the HKIFF who gave it to
the HKTDC who gave it to me) but I gave it to a friend without knowing
that the movie would be screened in two separate places.
Anyway, during the screening in the theater where I was, there were some
very serious security people who were facing the audience, watching us all the
time with infrared binoculars (no joke) to be sure that nobody was recording
illegally the movie.
On April 2nd, “Shinjuku Incident” was officially
released in the Hong Kong theathers in a Category IIb shorter version.
One week later, a friend of mine, who was too lazy to see it on big screen
(shame on him), bought a bootleg DVD of “Shinjuku Incident” in the
streets of Mongkok.
I did’t watched it, but I suppose it’s a IIb version, shot in a theater
during a regular screening. The cover is quite laughable since they put a
picture of Eric Tsang on the poster (he doesn’t play in the movie at
all).
“Shinjuku Incident” will be released in France by Metropolitan
Filmexport maybe before the end of this year...

oh my... the bootleg is pretty bad... I never understood why people would want to buy the bootleg DVD.. esp the ones that was recorded in a theatre... I get super annoyed when I come across a video on youtube that was a recording of the TV... *err*

I've had a friend who once bought a bootleg copy of "A Chinese Tall Story" right in front of me. And that personally pissed me off. For one thing, I worked on the Hong Kong release of this film on DVD. Secondly, the copy that he bought was burnt off the Hong Kong disc and thus, included all my translation work.
Of course, he wasn't very smart either and I've already disassociated with him (for many reasons).
Born in Istres (France), Frederic Ambroisine studied mathematics, then filmmaking in Paris in his twenties. At the same time, he was also trained as a stuntman by the Figlarz Action crew (SCORPION, 36, BABYLON A.D., LARGO WINCH etc.). He started as a filmcritic in 2000 on the website DVDRAMA, which is now one of the most popular French daily e-magazines about movies and DVD. Since 2002, he also wrote in several French magazines specialized in Asian Cinema, including KUMITE, ASIA PULP, MAD ASIA and SCORE ASIA. At the end of 2003, Frederic started to work as a documentary director on the SHAW BROTHERS French DVD collection distributed by WILD SIDE FILMS. He interviewed hundreds of Hong Kong artists and did more than 60 short documentaries between 2004 and 2006 related to Shaw Brothers kung-fu classics, inlcluding THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN, THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN, COME DRINK WITH ME, KILLER CLANS, KING BOXER, THE 8 DIAGRAM POLE FIGHTER etc. He also directed a few dozens of short documentaries about recent Hong Kong movies including the INFERNAL AFFAIRS trilogy, ONE NITE IN MONGKOK, P.T.U., DUMPLINGS, S.P.L., DOG BITE DOG... In 2006, he directed INSIDE HO YUK, his first 52-minute documentary (the other ones were 26 minutes or less). He’s now preparing his first musical documentary, ROCK 'N' ROLL GIRLS.
