(CNN) -- British author J.G. Ballard, whose boyhood experience in a World War II internment camp became the novel and film "Empire of the Sun," died Sunday at age 78, his literary agent said. He had suffered from cancer for several years.
"J.G. Ballard has been a giant on the world literary scene for more than 50 years," Margaret Hanbury said Monday.
"His acute and visionary observation of contemporary life was distilled into a number of brilliant, powerful novels, which have been published all over the world."
Ballard was born in a Western enclave in the Chinese city of Shanghai in 1930. The Japanese occupied the city in 1937, and Ballard and his family were placed in a civilian internment camp in 1943.
He began writing science fiction in the 1950s, with his work taking on a strongly psychological, apocalyptic bent in later decades.
But, "Empire of the Sun," his semi-autobiographical account of the war years, became his best-known work, and it was made into a film by director Steven Spielberg in 1988.
Canadian filmmaker David Cronenberg adapted another of Ballard's novels, "Crash," in 1996.
Its plot -- people sexually aroused by car accidents -- drew the novel an initial reaction of "beyond psychiatric help" from his publisher and an adults-only rating for the film.

Very, very sad loss. Crash is such an inventive novel, and his short stories are amazing. I have a feeling his writing is going to live on for a really long time.

Ugh.. we were just talking about him, too. Sad, but he left us some great stories. Empire of the Sun will always rank up there with my favourite of favourites.

i havn't seen this movie "Empire of the Sun", yet!  i suppose,  since it's semi-autobiographical, i must  see it for myself, to get acquainted more with JG Ballard!

His novels, will continue to inspire , if not , interest  movie producers nowadays!

But his novel "Crash" intrigued me more!  imagine, "people sexually aroused by car accidents"?

Dax Phelan was born in St. Louis, MO on July 8, 1975. He graduated from St. Louis Country Day School in 1994 and then moved to Dallas, TX, in order to pursue a BA in Pre-Med (Biology) at Southern Methodist University.

It was during his first semester at university that Phelan, a film lover since childhood, began writing his first screenplay. The screenwriting bug took hold over Phelan. He eventually dropped out of the Pre-Med program and enrolled in some Cinema
and English Literature classes – and the rest, as they say, is history.

Phelan graduated with BAs in Communication Arts: Cinema and English Literature with a Creative Writing Specialization in 1997 and then moved to Los Angeles, CA to attend graduate school at the American Film Institute in 1998.

During the summer of 1999, Phelan began working as a development intern for veteran producer Mace Neufeld (“The Omen,” “No Way Out,” “The Hunt For Red October,” etc.) at Paramount Pictures.

In 2000, when Phelan graduated from the American Film Institute with an MFA in Screenwriting, Neufeld hired him as Story Editor under his new first look deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment. In 2001, Neufeld promoted Phelan to Creative Executive. During his tenure at Mace Neufeld Productions, Phelan worked on such projects as “The General’s Daughter,” “The Sum of All Fears,” and “Asylum.”

In 2003, after selling his first screenplay, Phelan left Mace Neufeld Productions, in order to write full-time.

Since then, Phelan has written both original work and adaptations in a variety of genres, trying to work on whatever project excites him the most at the moment. Some of his credits include:
