A tribute to the three Es...and the big V

1: Eels frontman E

Real name’s Mark Oliver Everett, but everyone knows him as E. As the frontman of the rock group Eels, he has unleashed a series of albums over the years, and according to Mr Cassidy, all of them are great. Unfortunately, I had never heard of him until recently when his latest album, Hombre Lobo, arrived at the Beats office. The album blew me away—but I admit it may be a bit circumstantial. I mean, I would have loved the rad garage style guitar riffs regardless, but what did me in was the lyrical content of the album, which mirrored my exact feelings at the time. Needless to say, it was the perfect album for my mood and I’ve worshipped E as a rock god since. I went to HMV and purchased his greatest hits and it’s been spinning on my iphone nonstop.

Oh and he kinda looks like Paul from the awesome local indie band DP

2: Emmy the Great

In West New Territories, born and raised, in Tower Records was where she spent most of her days. Chilling out maxing relaxing all cool and all listening to some Weezer outside the school, when a couple of locals who were up to no good, started making trouble over her western woman-hood, she started listening to Aaron Kwok and her mom got scared, she said “you moving to your uncle and aunts in England”.

First—I know “England” doesn’t rhyme with “Bel Air”, but I couldn’t think of anything clever that can replace the word “England”. Second, what I just wrote is about 95% accurate. Emmy The Great, aka Emma Lee Moss, is a Hong Kong native who grew up listening to Aaron Kwok and Weezer (and I thought my combo of Britney and Chili Peppers in high school was insane) while schooling in the New Territories. Eventually, she moved to London, listened to more music (she notes Green Day as an influence according to BC Magazine’s article), and started a band. Now she’s a soulful singer songwriter with a knack for writing lyrics that goes beyond the standard singer/songwriter mold.

Her debut album—one that she self-financed and produced—has been getting regular spin on my itunes and she’ll be performing at Grappas on July 3rd. I can’t fucking wait.

Oh by the way, the Emmy the Great piece in this week’s BC is great. Good job Rachel. I’d give you an e-prop if I can get into your xanga.

3: Eric "E" Murphy

Of the Entourage clan, E is easily the most “boring”. Vinnie is the superstar who bangs hot chicks on a nightly basis, Ari Gold says exactly what we all think but don’t have the balls to say—his verbal smackdowns is usually the first draw for the show. Johnny Drama is the guy everyone pokes fun at but loves because he’s so over-confident and shameless. Turtle is hip hop so he’s gonna have a fan base.

But E? He’s the one with the common sense. He’s the one who puts friendship over everything else—always looking for Vinnie’s best interest. He’s the one who’s responsible, the one who acts the oldest of the gang. The one who's loyal, the one who's always looking out for his friends.

He’s the guy no one wants to be, but really everyone should be.

Now onto Vinnie...

Today, Warner Music Asia lost a good employee and an even better man. A combination of personal decision and outside forces have caused V to leave the company. I can't say I didn't see it coming, we've had a our share of chats. But I was still saddened to hear the news.

"I don't know if I belong in Hong Kong man," he said to me over MSN.

I told him I've been feeling the same thing.

"Me and you, we LA boys, we are built from a different mold"

I told him I don't really concur.

"But anyway, I just want to thank you man"

Just like that, he signed off. A few minutes later I received his going away email, an email that was sent to people in his office and everyone in the media (from SCMP to Milk magazine). He thanked all of us media and also the big ups at Warner.

He then finished the email with lyrics from Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life). Lyrics that I know in my heart and can recite in my sleep.

The big man will be going back to LA for some much needed time off and perhaps, soul searching*

The timing is just uncanny.

But anyway, Vinnie. Best of luck, and who knows, maybe I'll see you out in LA soon enough.

*By soul searching, I mean watch lots of Sportscenter, eat lots of steak/bbq ribs/tacos, and drive around the 210 with windows down.
