If i remember correctly, last weekend i been to 2 gallery and see some art work. Gallery ChanTan is a newly open gallery in Bangsar near bangunan UOA. Is a 2 story banglow that been modified become a gallery. According to the care taker, the mother company of gallery Chantan is actually an interior design firm that now put fund and established 2-3 gallery around PH and KL area.
Due to Ramadan month (near Malay New Year), they have the theme related to jawi. Is a kinda typography. Gallery ChanTan is exhibiting only those more establish artist. HOw establish, frankly i doesn't know till they say so. Anyway throughout the few of the exhibiter. Only Yusof Ghani's work got my attention. Muslim basically are not allow to adapt al-Quran into any artwork. So this Jawi is something like ABC in english which doesn't have any meaning. Each piece of his work is huge and POWER! b/c i felt the impact and strength that he applied on his painting.
All are about human size and the strong and bold texture were so impactful till i can't pull my eye out of it. He is the only artist in the exhibition who bring calligraphy to another level. More like abstract art to me. I dun feel so Jawi or islamic but more on Modernism and abstractionism.
