We had a garden when we were little. We used to give our neighbors fresh tomatoes and corn. And eggplant. That's the kind of thing that makes you cocky as a kid.

Since then, it's been on and off. But now my parents do have a nice little garden. I'm taking care of my mom's garden while she's in LA with my dad visiting my sis. So this is what I watered today:

    mint

    basil (sideways)

here's a stalk of corn not ready to pick

here are the cornstalks from a wider view

    squash

    my favorite, the chinese cucumbers

this one is ready to pick, more perfect when it's not too big
(otherwise, it's a little too tough)

I picked that one and I put it in my salad today. The slices were the perfect size, and it was perfectly crunchy. I also added a teeny bit of blue cheese, red onion, and boiled egg. But the cucumber totally made it.

This is what I'm eating before hitting ny's Restaurant Week on Thurs and Fri for prix fixe lunches (yeah, baby).  Hope to take pix and share.

Nice work by your parents! This reminds me abit of the garden my grandparents have behind their house in Brooklyn only they don't grow herbs.  But they do grow some gigantic squash and melons.  There is nothing like eating fresh produce from the garden.  I bet  that salad was quite tasty :D

Enjoy your meals at Tribeca Grill and Waterfront.  Can't wait to hear about your experiences.

Wendy,  Beautiful garden.  I have some veggies in some large pots.   Tomatoes and lots of basil.  Basil was going crazy so I found this great recipe for basil hummus.  Fabulous and so easy.  Enjoy your garden.  It is so delicious.    Jeanne @ JeanneHartmanActorsDetective.com

We were digging up the yard this year, and moving stuff around, so all I have are a few patio tomatoes which are sick looking (4 plants, maybe 4 meals....) and herbs.  I use my herbs all the time.  Cilantro, basil, and parsley for salads, eggs.  I also love my one arugula plant...it keeps producing and producing and adds so much flavor.  I haven't used my rosemary at all....maybe I'll pick up some lamb, or maybe even put it on some chicken.  Nothing like going outside and picking your own.  I also have never seen a Chinese cucumber in r/l or at the growers.  Can you save me some seed>  haha

Wow, your parents really got a real feel for California. It sounds like everyone's ok and it wasn't a big one, but it'd surely get MY attention.

I'd love a little plot to grow my own veg and fruit, the blog makes me want to plot my own little garden and perhaps have some chickens for eggs...In a dream mode now...I've never seen a chinese cucumber before, interesting.

Wow, this looks better than my mint--maybe its too warm here in North Carolina, my mint always dies back in the heat of summer.  Also, I see you have mulch and shade--my sad mint has neither.
