I never thought this would happen to me, but I went to the Lower East Side the other night to hang with some film cohorts and I did that thing where you think your car's been stolen but it's just on the next block. I make these firm decisions based on my imagination - no it was on THIS side of the Kebab House, not on that side, and stuck to it to the point where I called the police and the tow pound ("Tow Pound" always sounds like a cake to me - oh, if only it were a cake) about 15 times over two days, arrived at the spot to call 911 as I was told by the precinct and found myself assertively telling them the situation as I looked down the street and saw... my car.
Shit.
On another note, Ivy Lam and I went to see Vienna Teng and her band perform in the LES a few nights ago and the music was really incredible. Made me teary. VT has this super witty, under-the-radar sort of repartee going on with her bandmates in between sets which makes the show extra fun and puts you in touch with where the music is coming from. What sticks out in my mind was when they talked to a fan in the audience who often gives them pie. On 3/14, he also gave them pie and reminded them it was Pie Day. Get it? Pie Day? Hahahaha. Hahahaha. Also funny when her bandmate threatened to make Vienna "transpose" on the spot, and in turn, she punished him with a melodica. (Oh yeah? Take that, kinda thing.) Good times. Ivy took some cool pictures, hopefully she'll put them up.
BTW, I don't think I'm as 'about academics' as some people assume I am - the two people I have been closest to and trusted most in my life so far never graduated from high school, and they're both brilliant - but I have to say that I was surprised not too long ago when I realized a college-educated friend of mine didn't know that chickens were Birds and not Mammals. Here's to Chicken the Mammal. That's pretty - uh - edgy.
On a tangent, I want to blog about my best friend from high school, April. I haven't talked to April in a while. She was doing well with her design line when I suddenly found out she got an echocardiology degree. That was so her. To want to figure out what's wrong with people's hearts... tough job if you ask me.
Here's a pic of April I took in a rice paddy hat. No, I don't usually go around taking pictures of my white friends in rice paddy hats. I have no idea WhyTF we did this.
Was thinking about concerts because lately people have been blogging about them. I have April to thank for getting us close enough to see up Robert Smith's nose during the Wish tour. Now that I think about it, she really delivered (esp. with music). It was also April's parents who took me to see colleges when I was applying, so I have a lot to thank them for. Some people don't realize how much they have, so they don't do a lot with it, and some people do a lot with what they have, because they don't have as much (: I don't play no victim, but we all have our circumstances... and all in all, I do think God is pretty fair.
The best concert I ever saw was the Sugarcubes - at Roseland? in 1991, I think. This was such an incredibly beautiful song... just glittered and oozed like egg yolk all over you. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU3JrXt_cPk
Yikes. Yeah the mind is a powerful tool, and we literally can convince it and visually see things as being real. Glad that you was able to find the car though, that must of been a relief.
It's always nice when you can see the banter between band members, and you can see that they all have fun off stage too. With some bands, the performances can come across cold when there is backstage rivalry.
It's surprising but some of the most highly academic brains don't know simple life taught things. A colleague going to Oxford Uni asked my friend. 'What country is China in?' I guess we all have strength and weaknessess.
Best wishes for your friend. I like the picture of her in the paddy hat, it's got a romantic 50's film vibe to it.
I love the analogy of the egg yolk you use to describe this particular sugarcubes song, Bjork is a very unique persona with great talent for visuals and vocals in her MVs of solo and group work.
I adore the Sugarcubes sadly never
got to see them. Bjork never seems to age love to know what her beauty secret is. Am off to see Radiohead live on Sunday and it's just 10 yrs since i last saw them live. and that was a concert i remember wonder if they will be as good. as last time.
Nice you met with with Ivy.. she was in NYC??
glad ur car wasn't stolen....... i guess in NYC anything can happen right?
My dad parked his car downstairs his house one day and it was GONE....... then we realized it was towed.. because he parked too close to the hydrant
Whew, SO glad you didn't actually lose your car! Totally sounds like a mistake I would make though... =P
It was a fun evening chatting over desserts (although my brownie was cardboard dry, bleh) and seeing VT live. She and her bandmates were indeed funny and playful... That's the first time I've seen a melodica. It was so interesting to watch them play it cuz I kept expecting to see an accordian! :)
Wow....the car thing is really scary, especially when you find it actually was stolen! (That happened to me 7/5/07....) Now, it just makes for a good story even though you probably shaved a few seconds off of your life from the experience! =D
So, while I have never confused a chicken for a mammal, for a long time I refused to believe that when you eat chicken, you are actually eating chicken MUSCLE. I could not get my mind around that. You could talk me into believing that the dark meat was muscle. But the white meat could not possibly be muscle! Even now, despite all scientific fact to the contrary, I am not entirely convinced of it.
Vienna Tang is great. Awsome you saw her live, I so wanted to see her live in NY. Hope to see her perform one day. I really like Corinne May, similar vocal style. you should take a list to her: http://www.corrinnemay.com/
btw, shot all day for the shootout. uploading footage now. HK is a beautiful place to shoot.
Doh! About the car. Sometimes I forget where I've parked at the mall. Now, I actually look at the parking lot markers before I leave my car, just in case....
Mr. P luvs to harp to me about others whom he feels don't/didn't take advantage of what they have in terms of resources. Since he was born as a have-not, it pains him to see others who 'have' squander their opportunities. Hm, he may be making a tiny slight at me but perhaps I'm off the hook cos I'm a girl. Not that I had much either.
Haven't been to a concert in the last 2 years. Going to Madonna's in Nov. It should be fun.
I've done that very bone-headed thing myself! And I still do it regularly in parking lots, but now I don't get upset because no one in their right mind would ever steal my car!
Don't let university degrees fool you (and, from what you said, I don't think that they do). Having an intellectual outlook on life isn't dependent on any initials behind your name. Of course, getting formal training develops that innate interest/skill, but it doesn't create it. Although I have a Ph.D., I have worked most of my life among people with much less formal education. Some because of when and where they were born, there were truly no options for more education, and others because this was definitely not their calling in life. Just like with religion, where some of the most loving, caring and wise people I know have never had any formal religious affiliation, so, too, with education, some of the smartest and most intellectually engaged individuals I have known never got beyond high school. To judge someone on their formal education (or lack thereof) is like judging someone on their hair color. I wouldn't recommend it.
On another topic entirely--my favorite concert of all time was a local Southern bar band by the name of The Fabulous Knobs. The year was 1981, the venue was Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill, NC. The band played covers of all the old great soul and R&B masters of the 60s and 70s--Otis Redding, Aretha, etc., along with the Stones and other white blues rock. But the reason this concert was so memorable (well, apart from Debbie di Milo doing the best white girl version of RESPECT ever), was that I met my future husband on the dance floor. We never had a "song", we had a band!
you had a blonde moment. Don't worry about it, it happens to everyone.
The last concert I went to see was The Roots b2b BT (Brian Transeau, the film composer) + Infected Mushroom in 2005. I remember the roots playing so loud that you could hear more feedback than music (turned me off on their live shows).
Flying Lotus' new album is out btw, just thought I'd throw that in. =P
I have friends from various backgrounds and it enrichens my life. And a graduation from school or an university degree does not tell much about the person itself!
