Had a funny techie nightmare recently when my film was slightly out of sync. Then it looked like some of my footage somehow came in as "drop," "non-drop," "drop," "non-drop" frame footage. What the hell? A capturing glitch. That's enough to drive any human being nuts. (And making notes to yourself isn't enough - it's definitely better to communicate with others.) I started lining everything up on my own instead of by the book - who cares how the film looks, let's go back to the compressed copy.
Just kidding. Heh heh. Yes, filmmakers, I have very basic techy fears and am conquering them just now.
My friend Micah said it best: "Isn't filmmaking a ball of fun?" (irony)
Yulien and I went to the annual Competitive Eating event at Coney Island - otherwise known as Nathan's Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. It was funny watching everyone grab for those hot dogs. After tying, Kobayashi lost on a 5-dog breaker to Joey Chestnut (I actually didn't tell Yulien that secretly, I was rooting for Chestnut. Kobayashi's won too many times).
I was curious about who writes the commentary for these events b/c the announcer was pretty funny. He rose up ominously on this blue podium kind of like Mr. Octopus does on his tentacles in Spider Man, and made these serious announcements about the contestants: "Born in Northern China, so-and-so gave up a career in science to become the Queen of Tamales" (you can see that skinny Asian girl in the second video below). Competing against the Master of Tiramisu and the King of Asparagus, of course.
A closer view. There you have it, competitive eating.
Later on, we saw an appealing but lonely sort of booth and both ended up ordering jerk chicken. It looked good but it wasn't that tender. (I don't know if Yulien thought so?) Probably usually is, just maybe not that day. Or maybe it would have been if it came with the beans instead of the bread like it was supposed to. So I think as we ate, we ended up talking more and more about the stresses of work (not sure if Yulien noticed that, maybe it was just me? Jackson Heights was a little better). Next time we'll be pickier and then we can just coast.
i have this gross fascination with competitive eating contests. i think it's pretty awesome that the world champs are small asian folks--sonya thomas is amazing! it's a testament to the true eating prowess of asians worldwide.
I remember Kobayashi competed against a bear on a TV show called "Man vs. Beast" several years ago. It was the first time I had seen him lose and he seemed pretty disappointed. Haha.
I saw on ESPN that Kobayashi and Chestnut were tied and then had to go to the "dog off" I don't think I could watch them stuffing themselves in person as I'm so grossed out when I see it on TV. There's something so primal about these contests. Hey I thought you were gonna go see the TK movie.
I remember a small Asian-looking woman also competing. That must be her. Yes, Kobayashi's won a few too many times. I always wonder if they hurl after finishing. Can't want to digest all those weiners.
i've been there before to watch the contest. it was so crowded and sunny but Kobayashi won... (yay!). he had lost before too... when asked if he'll compete again, he said definitely... tat's the spirit!
<><
What always amazes me is how thin a lot of the contestants often are. But i must admit I struggle watching those type of contests, I have a thing about seeing food once it's made connection with the mouth.
It's funny how conversations can roll into different topics, straying miles away from what was originally in discussion. It makes for a good friendship.
can't believe Kobayashi actually lost ....... i thought he was unbeatable!
i suppose that's life ......... i thought Federer was unbeatable an Wimbledon too and finally lost to Nadal on Sunday night also ... nothing last forever ;o(
Garsh....I really have a hard time swallowing (no pun intended) these food eating contests when there are so many people going hungry. Why not invite them to be the ones in the contest? I dunno....it's obvious these people who entered the contest don't need the extra calories or future hospital bills. Wahhh....
