Important question for Chinese food cooks:I tried making crispy orange beef the other night -- from the Shun Lee cookbook, which I highly recommend. It's perfect for anyone who struggles with their mom's Chinese cookbooks (which I do b/c my Chinese isn't great), but wants something that is basically the same method expressed really clearly in English, with good photos. There's just a teeny bit of Americanized twist in some ingredients (example: sweet gherkins in Sichuan style chicken). The book just makes cooking Chinese seem easier.
All that said - with the crispy orange beef - this is the second time that I tried to find "flank steak" and then discovered that the steak that was labelled "flank steak" in the American grocery stores was the wrong kind of meat.
What the hell? Does anyone know what kind of beef is right for these types of Chinese dishes? (the kind that is fried in deep oil quickly, taken out, and then fried again)I also have another question. Oil. Do people reuse oil? Is that gross? So many dishes require using a ton of oil and it seems like such a waste to throw it out. Is it okay to reuse oil "with a hint of eggplant" etc.?

The subject of Korean Dramas has resurfaced lately... (ahem, Lydia!) So I decided to post another old article I wrote for Theme in 2006. Looking at it again, the whole beginning section was awfully wordy and so I chopped it out... the second page scan came out a little fuzzy so I made those pieces bigger...
I focused on the Cinderella type themes in Korean dramas - of which there are a ton! This article speaks to the girly-girl and Confucian in you (whether you're a girl or a guy, heh heh). It will make more sense if you've actually seen the shows (again, these are older) and the actresses I'm talking about!
In the first line, "them" means Korean dramas.

Final procrastination: do any of the girls out there use a hair-straightening iron, and if so, can you recommend a brand? They range from $19 to $190!
