Hey, I didn't know that Tegan and Sara did a cover of "When You Were Mine," originally sung by Prince and then covered by Cyndi Lauper. This is one of my all-time favorite songs from the 80's (Lauper's version). The rest of my room is a total mess, but this little corner has my old "She's So Unusual" up. I think Tegan and Sara must have been like five when it came out.

Here's their acoustic version (hey, it was posted on my b'day, cool)

Tegan and Sara are going to be in NY performing along with a reading by Augusten Burroughs (Running w/Scissors, a great book/movie about people who are insane) on Sept 4 at HousingWorks Bookstore in Soho.

Here's Prince singing it live at the Ritz in 1981 (also on my b'day, coincidentally).

It's always cool when you hear different artists rocking out the same tune in their own style.  I still like Cyndi Lauper's version the best but Tegan & Sara bring a great vibe to their version as well.  Prince is such an awesome song writer!

Cyndi Lauper is so cool and to be honest while the other too versions are good I still prefer Cyndi's (the lead in for the Prince version is too line)

I like Tegan and Sara's version of it. I never heard Prince's version before, but I have Lauper's. She was a great character, I think I over played the 'Girls Just wanna have Fun' MV when I was younger, and of course she was in Wrestling as a guest at the time I watched it, so it really boosted her profile for me. Class musician.

Oooh, thanks for the blast from the past.  I was still listening to mainstream music in the early 80s, when I started graduate school and was a fan of both Prince and Cyndi Lauper.  Charlie Wan posted Cocteau Twins on his blog today.  Such a trip down memory lane.  I'll have to post my own nostalgic video from the late 80s in a few minutes.

What little I remember of CL is that she was competing with the prettier, vixenish Madonna. CL looked and acted...disturbed. haha. I wonder if I had any of CL's music on vinyl ....don't think so. I had a small vinyl LP collection. Think mom tossed them after I moved out. Grr.

CL was a little strange to me in her early days. I guess it worked for her. Prince has also been around for a while - liked some of his stuff.
