  I think it was Oligosoma species because I have a relatively dry (at this time of year/summer) north facing (sunny) backyard.  It whipped out of sight fairly quickly so I couldn't really identify it.  I'm not sure of their status here but I went to the NZ Department of Conservation site and looked (I couldn't see it but) they have a page about how to attract lizards to one's garden, and I may do that.   I knew there was a reason to let my lawns grow long.  haha  Actually I have the perfect section as it is steep and terraced with rocks - lots of nice hidey holes for lizards.

  I just saw a common NZ skink in my garden, I got all excited, I know you probably don't care but I had to tell someone and nobody here will care either.  
  (the NZ skink population has really taken a hammering from cats)
