yikes...

TIme really flies and it's so weird to realize that 2007 is just about a month and a half away from being a thing of the past.  Looking at the past year, I thought there was this one thing I just had to share with y'all that happened early in June.  I went out with a couple of friends to a place called All-Stars where they serve beer and fried chicken served in a wide assortment of flavors.  Can't miss it, they are simply delish!  Anyway, I left for a quick smoke with my friends (both chinese) and there were alot of other Chinese people smoking outside.  Then, a big group of black people popped out of nowhere, screaming at the top of their lungs in Cantonese.  They declared that the "hak gwai's (niggers) are here".  All the Chinese smokers outside of the fried chicken bar just looked puzzled and started to crack up.  Some even thought that "hak gwai" is the only thing they can say in Cantonese.  Then, one of those black people started asking the convenience store if there were any cigarettes in Cantonese.  The funny thing is, they spoke perfectly with no apparent accent.  So I yelled back at them and told them that their pronunciation is pretty good.  They reply back to me and said thanks in Cantonese.  I was just stoked and realized that it was like a perfect Dave Chappelle skit.  If anyone didn't get the irony here, black people are known to favor fried chicken and yet, we Chinese show up in their territory so to speak.

contrary to popular belief, Americans are the only ones who tend to not be able to speak any language except English. They were probably African or something.

I bumped into a couple of black guys that spoke perfect cantonese in Wan Chai before. They asked me if I was from the states.

Yes it's handy to speak another language and pretend that you don't, it's good fun to see the reaction of others when you finally let on that you know what they have said.
