chasing the 30 before 30 dream

Before you forget the curious backpacker I once was, I'm still chasing a personal milestone of backpacking across 30 countries independently before I turn 30 this November.

I did 25 when I was 25 and had slowed down since, covering just 3 more in 4 years, as I channeled my efforts to realise the other big dream of being an actor.

The remaining two are likely to come from this list - India, Nepal, Russia, The Philippines, Myanmar, Taiwan or North Korea. Number 30 would likely be Russia or India.

Click on the link to see pictures of the 29 countries on my picture website www.picturetrail.com/wehoth

Here's the rule - if it has a flag of it's own, I count it as a 'country'. For.eg. North Korea and South Korea are two countries. And Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are counted seperately from China. If you've been to those places, you'll know why I do that. I'm tempted to count Tibet seperately too as it definitely is very different from the mainland China in my eyes.

    Here are the 28.

     1) Singapore
     2) Hong Kong (at least 10 times: most recent Jul 2006)
     3) South Korea (2 times: Dec 2000, May 2004)
     4) China (at least 20 times covering 16 provinces: most recent Aug 2006)
     5) Thailand (at least 5 times: most recent Aug 2004)
     6) UK (2 times: Sept 2001, Sept 2002 - Oct 2003)
     7) Malaysia (at least 5 times: most recent Mar 2005)
     8) Cambodia (2 times: Jan 2002, Aug 2004)
     9) Vietnam: Feb 2002
    10) Macau (at least 10 times: most recent Jul 2006)
    11) Japan: May, Jun 2002
    12) USA: Dec 2002
    13) Mexico: Dec 2002
    14) Ireland: Feb 2003
    15) Belgium: Apr 2003
    16) Germany: Apr 2003
    17) Austria (2 times: Apr & Aug 2003)
    18) Czech Rep: Jul 2003
    19) Croatia: Aug 2003
    20) Hungary: Aug 2003
    21) Romania: Aug 2003
    22) Slovakia: Aug 2003
    23) Italy: Sept 2003
    24) Vatican City: Sept 2003
    25) France: Oct 2003
    26) Indonesia: Dec 2003
    27) Laos: Aug 2004
    28) MONGOLIA: Aug 2006

    29) The Philippines: May 2007

    AND...

in China, I've previously visited these provinces -

    1. Beijing
    2. Shanghai
    3. Guangdong – Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Dongguan
    4. Sichuan – Chengdu, Leshan, E’mei
    5. Yunnan – Kunming, Lijiang, Dali
    6. Guangxi – Guilin, Yangshuo
    7. Shaanxi – Xi’an, Huashan
    8. Henan – Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Dengfeng (Shaolin temple)
    9. Ningxia – Yinchuan, Zhongwei
    10. Zhejiang – Hangzhou, Hengdian
    11. Liaoning – Dalian
    12. Tibet
    13. Qinghai – Xining, Golmud
    14. Tianjin – Tanggu, Taida

The Chinese say there are 30 provinces in China, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. Oh, and Tibet.

    dangerous place to live

Looking back at what I thought about home on my recent trip back -

If you choose to live a closed life, then your life experiences will be pretty minimal and pretty gray and boring. And you can never feel secure with interacting with anyone or anything outside of that closed zone. If you allow new things to come in, to experience new things, then you will be able to take something away with you. Especially here in this county, we’re so closed off to new things, are so set into certain routines, it becomes a dangerous way to live.

    pure stranger

Hi friends who worked with me on the much delayed 'Tibet Film'...

I know the film was first shot in Tibet at July 2005, which was a year and a half ago and it is now finally completed!!!

With proper music and subtitles in place, the final polished version of this short film looks great I must say. I am very proud of it.
The film has been renamed 'Pure Stranger'.

Since 2005, I had done some extra takes in Macau and Beijing but got seriously delayed in the editing process because I couldn't find music for it.

Now that it's finally completed, I have to first say sorry to some of you who acted for the show but for practical reasons [to keep the film short], I had decided to not include the takes that you were in.
So, Lili, Daisuke, Kenji, Makoto and Tianci, I'm sorry I had to take your scenes out! But you sure were mentioned in the 'special thanks' page when the credits roll.

here's what the credits look like -

Tell me how I can post you a copy of the film.
But believe me, it'll take a long time before I get to post it by mail. If I'm seeing you in Macau or Singapore soon, then you'll likely get a copy way before the others.

    shows over (the RAT-OX diaries)

    11 dec, 3:47am

Shows over. It was fantastic tonight. Possibly one of my best shows ever.
The audiences were great, responding to my every line and every gesture. Thank you lovely macau audiences. You had me replaying the delicious moments of tonight's show in my head over and over again since the minute it ended.

I hope to take this show to theatre festivals elsewhere, hopefully starting with Singapore, Taiwan and some parts of China. Then out west.

Last night's shows however, was terrible. Lots of mis-cues, technical mistakes and the actor (me) was very distracted. Very dry.

Thank you Hiu Koc theatre company, and those who worked with me these 4 days. It was my great honor to work with you again Hiu Koc. Thank you

Thank you Theatre Space (HK). Without you, there wouldn't be a director, action choreographer, lighting designer, music composer or even rehearsal rooms for this show. Thank you.

next up, I'll be returning to HK to audition for a movie. And perhaps be offered more. And next up means two hours later. My ferry to HK departs at 8am.

Life has again taken on a lets-race-forward pace, it seems.

    'The RAT-OX diaries' in MACAU

final advert for 'the RAT-OX diaries' in Macau

    Hi friends in Macau

I have just arrived in Macau from HK.

My solo show 'The Rat-Ox Diaries' was on at HK Sheung Wan Civic Centre last night and it went really well. I'm very pleased with the feedback from the audiences and had a great time sharing intimate thoughts with them at the post show forum.

If you read Chinese, you can go to http://weehongthomas.blogspot.com to read an email which an anonymous audience sent, commenting on the HK performance.

Here in Macau, the show will be on the 9th (sat) and 10th (sun), which is this weekend.

If you haven't got tickets to the show and don't know where to get them, please call my SM Ms Joanie Tam at 6687 8670. Tell her how many tickets you'll need and you can then collect them at the door. The tickets are 45MOP each (35MOP for students).

Try not to call me to book tickets because I need quiet space in my head to concentrate on the acting. My HK friends nearly drove me nuts on this regard.
But as I'm doing so, please remember that I'm thinking of all of you and the show is mainly for you, my dear friends in Macau.

The address of Hiu Koc Theatre is -

Rua Dos Pescadores No.82-86, Edif. Ind. "Nam Fung" 12-Andar A, Macau
    (Tel) : (853) 531308
    Macau P.O. Box 680

Au Kam Tong is my action choreographer and just between you and me, Jacob Yu directed it (keep it a secret please). Cantonese speakers will know who the former is and theatre practitioners in the region must know Jacob too.

Alot of work has been invested in creating the piece, so I hope you can find time to come watch it and choose another day to go to the show at the cultural centre, which I'm sure is very interesting as well.

Unfortunately for you and me, I've spoken to my team and we've decided to not have any audiences at my full run tomorrow night. It's not fair for audiences who buy tickets.

Much as I love Macau and would like to stay longer, I'm scheduled to leave the next morning (11 Dec) after my last show to be in HK for a film audition. I would probably return to Macau on the evening of the 12th but again leave the next day to Guangzhou for my flight back to Beijing. I'm sure you're not surprised to again hear that I'm still bouncing around places in haste.

Anyway, see you at one of my shows. And maybe lunch during one of these days would be good. That you can call me for. My number is unchanged - 664 1439

    love, Thomas Lim 08 dec 2006, 3:30am

response from a HK audience (the RAT-OX diaries)

Everything has a price for it。

    RAT-OX material

    Dear friends,

Below are some publicity material for my first solo show ‘The Rat-Ox Diaries’ which will be staged in Hong Kong (Sheung Wan Civic Centre) on 6 December and Macau (Hiu Koc blackbox) on 9 and 10 December.

Hope to see you at one of my shows!
    --

To my mom and my late grandmother - I feel you here with me every step along the way.

'The Rat-Ox Diaries' is a story of the most treasured memories from my early traveling days. Much of its contents tell of the emotional turmoil experienced and the friendships I’ve found from a six-month trip across East Asia – a journey that has changed my life forever.

Behind each and every piece of my creative work and travel experience, family and friends from home, and people whom I've met on my travels who’d touched my heart were always there somewhere in the background - I see them most clearly and I love them so much. It's hard to say so much in so little to so many... But, if a man can be judged by the friends he keeps and the love he gets, I must be the luckiest man in town. Enjoy the show.

    adverts for solo show

My first solo show will be performed at the following 'countries' on the following dates.

    Dec 5, 6 - HONG KONG
    Dec 9, 10 - MACAU

The show is called 'The Rat-Ox Diaries' and will be directed by renowned HK theatre director Jacob Yu.

Theatre Space (one of the top companies in HK) will be producing the HK shows and Hiu Koc theatre company (the longest running company in Macau) will be producing the Macau ones. The Macau shows will be performed at Hiu Koc black box.

As always, like the 2 shows I've written and directed over the past 2 years which both carried the element of travelling and lost souls, I wrote this solo show to tell of 2 amazing encounters with fellow travellers whom I've met over my first 6-month long backpacking days around asia in 2002.

I will be using alot of self-invented 'animal Kung Fu' in the show along with the most acting I've ever done in any single show for a long time. I will however, not be directing the show myself because I've realised I'm not ready to direct for theatre and am learning lots from Jacob at each rehearsals. I belive some of you may know Jacob. So, another good reason to come to the shows!

    Ok, end of advert one.

    Now for advert two -

Before the above mentioned solo-shows, I will first be performing in a HK theatre play called 'Taiji' on Oct 20, 21 and 22 at Kwai Tsing Theatre in Kowloon. Tickets are 90, 120 and 160 HKD. The show is about the teachings and practices of Taichi and I play a young Taichi master. You may like to know that I'm the most highly skilled character in the show and I have some very long fight scenes which I defeat all the other challengers (sometimes two or more at one go). Yeah! The only fighter that I couldn't top, whom I come to a draw with, is TVB actor Au Kam Tong. Veteran film actor Eddy Ko Hung also stars.

let me know if you're coming. I will be very touched if you do and I hear I will get discounts on tickets (booked through me).

words for solo show - 'The RAT-OX Diaries'

The power and freedom to wander separates animals from man.

The more a man travels, the more he connects with the natural (survival) instincts in him. Like all members of the animal kingdom, he automatically becomes concerned only with the essentials in life and is always spontaneous. He becomes open to new happenings around him and reacts to them accordingly. He is stunning to watch because he is ever present in the current moment and is always true to his most organic desires.

‘Kung fu’, or more appropriately ‘Wushu’, translated literally, means martial (“wu”) arts (“shu”). When it was first developed, its sole purpose was (and will always be) for survival. Hunting animals, procuring food, fighting against aggressive wildlife, surviving harsh weather conditions, and so forth prompted the birth of this mode of behavīor.

A lot of Kung fu were derived from imitating animal movements and both exist for the primary purpose of survival. When a man travels long and far enough, he gradually learns to free himself from all his envies, jealousies, selfishness, and fears. He is forced to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comfort of home and friends. He is constantly off balance and nothing is his except the essential - air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky. He thus becomes confident in interacting with the outside world and finds his own introspective way into becoming part of it.

'The Rat-Ox Diaries' is a story of my most treasured memories from a six-month long journey across East Asia in 2002 with much of its contents telling of the amazing people I’ve met on that trip. It's people that make travel - seeing things may be great, doing things may be exciting, but it's people who'll stay in you memories.

It's difficult to express in short bursts how grateful I am for the kindness offered by the many amazing friends I met on the road and tougher still picking out these few encounters to compress into a 40 minute show. You see, it's hard to say so much in so little to so many... But, if a man can be judged by the friends he keeps and the love he gets, I must be the luckiest man in town. Enjoy the show.
