Arch, Ball, Heel, And Toe Problem Reasons And Treatments
A bunion is a painful swelling that usually occurs at the head of one of the long bones (metatarsal bones) of the big or little toe, which extend from the arch of the foot and connect to the toes. A bunion begins to form when the big or little toe is forced in toward the rest of the toes. This causes the head of the metatarsal bone to jut out and rub against the side of your shoe. The underlying tissue becomes inflamed, and a painful swelling forms. Bone growth may occur at the site of irritation. The toe grows towards the rest of your toes at an increasing angle.
If shoes do require breaking-in, moleskin pads should be placed next to areas on the skin where friction will occur. Shoes purchased for exercise should be specifically designed for a person's preferred sport. The heel area should be strong and supportive (but not too stiff) and the front of the shoe flexible. As soon as the heels show noticeable wear, the shoes or heels should be replaced. If a person insists on wearing high-heeled shoes, the heel should be wedge-shaped. (Even in these cases, the heel height should not be extreme.) People should avoid extreme variation between exercise footwear, street, and dress shoes. Shoes should be changed during the day.
Most (young) women like to look stylish and wear a shoe with a medium to high heel. The problem with high heels is that your bodyweight is not evenly distributed across the underside of the foot, but rather 80% of your weight pushes down on only one area of the foot, the forefoot area. i.e. the balls of your feet. This is totally unnatural and before long the entire forefoot structure collapses, leading to constant pressure and friction in the ball of the foot. The body reacts and builds up thick layers of callous in this area which in turn leads to a burning sensation under the foot.

The problem can further be avoided in the future by padding around the ball of your foot to take pressure off of it. Get a piece of felt or foam rubber (try using a Dr. Scholl's heel pad, for example). It should be 1/4" thick and about 2" square. Cut a shallow "U" out of the pad so that it fits snugly behind (not over) the ball of your foot. Behind, incidentally, means on the heel side, not the toe side. The pad should fit right behind the painful area. Tape the padding to your foot and wear it in your daytime shoes as well as your running shoes.
Sport activities contribute significantly to side of foot pain with athletics and gymnastics being top of the list. There are two distinctive fractures than can cause intense side of foot pain and these are March fractures and Stress fractures. March fractures result from undertaking vigorous physical activity without the correct warm up procedures or when a person undertakes extreme exercise outside of their normal everyday activities. Stress fractures normally result from repetitive and excessive strain over a given period of time. From the onset of any side of foot pain , first treatment is to simply remember RICE. This stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation.
Foot pain is most commonly associated with plantar fasciitis but can occur because of a wide variety of causes. Often the remedy is in the choice of shoes, footwear. Wearing tight fitting shoes or the use of a very flat and unsupportive shoe such as flip flops can aggravate or precipitate inflammation of tendons, ligaments, or bones in the foot. The pain associated withplantar fasciitis is usually sharp and aching and occurs during the first few steps after sleeping or resting. This is because the deep tissue in the arch of the foot that attaches to the heel bone contracts when at rest.
