Consequences – A Girls’ Night Out Story

I know this night is going to be a hit just like all the other girls’ nights out! This one is going to be bigger and grander because my four female partners in crime and I are up to no good tonight. Bring on the false eyelashes, the sexy and quirky outfits, and not forgetting those killer heels. We all dream to escape to surrealism tonight with false identities in a humid city that portrays itself as a village. We are completely ready to forget our responsibilities for our night of mayhem, discuss our evil plans, simply find an excuse for everything and even accept free drinks from desperate single men while we dance the night away to our favourite DJ in town spinning the hottest international techno tunes…

Earlier, Em and Sum were playing dress up. Now, we were all together, fey and raunchy with our big hair bobbing wildly; our divine wardrobe concoctions clashed complimentary against the neon as we paraded through the club.

Several tequila slammers later, the little exhibitionist inside us took over and one by one, we were shimmying on the dance floor; daring each other to tousle strangers’ hair and step on dancing feet. We decided to go on a mission to find our other girl pals – Kate and Dan. We were restless and hungry; making merry mischief and like rampant love vandals, we descended upon the urban hustle. We were trying to hold it together, but gradually, we were disintegrating kaleidoscope style.

The night shattered into a dizzy array of colours and noise, a crowd of blurry sequined faces dancing under streetlights to the splintered sounds of some distant beat. Our heels clomped along in time; our passing reflections revealing a mirage of dark mascara-d eyes and glistening lips, guffaws of laughter, and swirling glows of cigarettes. We delighted in our little tribe, collapsing on one another in eruptions of drunken glee. We were giddily smashed, wobbling high-heeled through the chaos, scanning the surround for some lucky eye to catch, some desolate heart to snag with hooked and tempting fingers.

    Somehow we all got separated.

Stumbling in from the pitch-black night I looked across the brightly lit room. In a dark corner he sat, face illuminated by the streetlights outside. Hope and adrenalin shot though me as I prepared myself to fight. I instantly knew what I wanted. Guys aren't threatening I thought, its other girls that are the competition. She was sharp, but my nails were sharper.

Sharp enough to claw her little eyes out. But I stopped myself. I wasn't going to get to that level. There may be blood. There could be consequences. The night was drawing to a close and my friends are giving me this look. My feet are sore from these four inch heels. I am not going to suffer any more bruises tonight. Just then my phone goes off and I look down and there's another message, this time from Kim:

‘‘Hey babes, the music's getting really good now! Where are you?’’

That's all I needed. I head onto the street and hail down a taxi. Where there's a girlfriend waiting and some music playing, you know you're going to be just fine.

    The End.

The Arch of Westwood is a community art work in progress. It's an art installation project sponsored by the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation and Swire Properties, Hong Kong as a response to a Vivienne Westwood exhibition which is coming at the end of this year. It's loosely based on one of Westwood's iconic platform shoes. It is an assemblage piece and is an homage to the work of Westwood. Hence, the ‘arch’ of the shoe parallels the arch as a classical form of achitecture. The Arch of Westwood is perhaps a way of preserving the form and structure, but deriving a very unusual "arch experience" or arch form. This is my interpretation of capturing the essence of Westwood - subversion of the status quo.

In recent years, architects have adopted techniques such as printing, pleating, folding, draping, and weaving to develop more complex exterior surfaces, or skins, for their buildings, while fashion
designers have looked to architecture for ways to construct clothes with greater volume and inherent structural integrity.

Westwood’s work can be interpreted as architectural. Her clothes are always about volume, the illusion of space and shapes.

The Arch measuring 3m in height will consist of 30 linked panels each representing one of these themes. Each panel will link together to form the iconic Westwood platform shoe. 30 students and volunteers are currently responsible for building and creating the art piece.

The 3D visualisations were created by my very talented friend, 3D artist, Victoria Caution.
