• The Wrestler vs. Benjamin Button vs. Slumdog Millionaire -- who wins?

  I'm totally surprised. I've never been a big fan of director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream, Pi) and I've been a huge fan of both directors David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Zodiac, Panic Room, Fight Club) and Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Millions, 28 Days Later, Trainspotting).

  The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: 5/10 Yeah, I know I'm giving this movie a rotten. The gift of film making is the ability to relate a story by SHOWING not SAYING. This movie was hobbled by a Forrest Gump framework strung together by an overabundance of voiceover narration.

  
  

  Slumdog Millionaire: 8/10 Another great achievement by one my top three favorite working directors who constantly challenges himself and the audience by trying something completely new genre-wise with each film he makes. This is a movie that I'll probably watch multiple times as a feel-good drama. Feel good -- almost TOO feelgood at the end and I'm sure that I'm not the only person who felt that the end could have happened another way for a more "bittersweet" effect.

  
  

  The Wrestler: 10/10 I find Darren Aronofsky's previous movies to be too much style, too little and too blunt in substance. Well, someone nailed him down and got him back to DISCIPLINED filmmaking: strip away the unnecessary style and tell an easy story and get out of the way to let your actors do their work. As every critic has said before, Mickey Rourke is an absolute acting marvel in this film -- quite possibly the most likeable character of the year. This movie might be too slow and too generic storyline-wise for some people, but I found it to be absolutely perfect acting... I feel like Aronofsky finally fulfilled his filmmaking potential after many, many semi-failed attempts.

  
  

  So, IMHO the best movie of the year was The Wrestler. Whew... it's been a while since I've been able to comprehensively watch all of the top films of the year.
