So just in case there's any confusion, I'll let people know now that the reason my Cantonese is so crappy is because, well, I'm not from Hong Kong. Not that I'm not trying to learn... it's slow and I don't actually get much time to practice. But I'm actually, Taiwanese-Chiense born in Ohio who grew up in Maryland/Los Angeles and only began making the move to Asia four years ago.
After this trip, I feel like I really should go back to Taipei more often... More relaxed and less finance-y than Hong Kong, plus I can actually use my Mandarin rather than guestimating Cantonese, and definitely less aggravating than mainland China... It's been about a year and a half since my last trip to Taiwan, and I only had three days to enjoy myself during this trip. Nonetheless, I did get to meet up with some of my extended family and intersect with friends flying in from D.C., Los Angeles, and Hong Kong -- lots of people just happened to be in Taipei this weekend for two special birthdays.
Here are some fun pics:

This is the kind of photos you take at 4:30 in the morning ...

Happy birthday to a special birthday girl and all her Taiwan and HK friends...
I spent all of Friday afternoon just wandering around on my own and doing some shopping and cafe-hopping. It's really the first time I've been able to roam the streets of Taipei by myself (and without family) ... well, since I was eight years old and spent a summer here...

There's this awesome extended wall of graffiti outside of the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. Headed over and took some photos before dinner...

A particularly dark graffiti stencil...
Check out more of the graffiti art in
my photo album or see it for yourself on the corner of 仁爱路 and 光復路. It takes up a full one and a half big city blocks...

Happy birthday
Baby_Ann! You must be pretty special if you have 20 people from all over the world fly in to Taipei to celebrate your birthday for the THIRD TIME in a week. The birthday party also gave us the opportunity to reconnect with a bunch of friends from the U.S. whom I haven't seen in ages...

PG girls reunite!
