NEWS FLASH

Yeah, I know... I haven't posted anything here in a long time. This is because nothing of great interest (at least to you guys out there, I guess) has happened in my life... in terms of my stunt career and all related topics. I got hit by a couple of exciting events in my private life, but that's another story and... well, private .

This career stagnation is due to a number of things. In Germany, we're dealing with a general depression in film business at pres...Read more

FINAL THOUGHTS ON MODERN WUSHU TRAINING METHODS

PART III

From what I’ve said so far, one might think that I’m against hard training in general... or Chinese Wushu training methods in particular. Nothing could be further from the truth. I love Wushu. I’ve dedicated a large chunk of my life to Chinese martial arts (almost 25 years so far, to be exact).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0MaPZ_7-as

Still one of my all-time favorite Wushu clips... luv it!I’m not...Read more

MORE RANDOM THOUGHTS ON MODERN WUSHU TRAINING METHODS

PART II

Okay, last time I mulled over the question why some of the training methods & exercises used in modern competitive Wushu are more often than not diametrically opposed to the latest empirical findings of sports science. Why the hell do I seem to be the only guy who finds this noteworthy? Nobody in Wushu seems to show the slightest inclination to call at least the very worst of these methods into question... not even after winding up on the operating table.

It’s ...Read more

RANDOM THOUGHTS ON MODERN WUSHU TRAINING METHODS

PART I

Most visitors of my blog will probably know that I’m also working as a Wushu coach here in Germany.

Because of this side job, I get confronted with one particular topic almost on a daily basis, and it’s gotten to a point where I’m just a  hair’s breadth away from losing my famous North German cool.

I’ve been talking myself blue in the face on this topic (my poor students can tell you a thing or two about it), but I still get those doubting looks from otherwise ...Read more

STUNT TRAINING AT THE BAVARIA FILM STUDIOS

Yup, here comes another one! I’m churning out blog entries these days like machine gun on caffeine tabs.

Anyway, I went to join a stunt seminar at the Bavaria Film Studio’s very own Stunt Center on Monday & Tuesday.

GERMAN RELEASE OF “JOHN RABE”

The movie about The Good German of Nanking in theaters now!

I went to attend a sneak preview of the German-French-Chinese co-production

John Rabethe other night. Well, not actually what you should call a sneak preview, since the movie had already premiered at the Berlin Film Festival a couple of weeks ago.

Still, this screening was kind of special, since it took place one day before the actual German release date on April 2, 2009. T...Read more

CELLULOID STEROID

The (not so) Secret Role of Performance-enhancing Drugs in the Motion Picture Industry

Some readers of this blog may wonder: „What kind of a stoopid topic is THAT?“ Well, folks... it’s my blog, and I write about whatever I wanna write about. But seriously, if I had a penny for every time I got drawn into a debate on this particular subject, I’d be a friggin‘ millionaire. If you’re not into big muscles (or you don’t want to admit you are) you might wanna skip this one. This blog entry contains so much testosterone th...Read more

THE SHAOLIN TEMPLE

Shao Lin Si

少林寺Tadaaaah! Time for another Wushu movie classic . To be perfectly honest with you, and I know this going to sound silly, I’ve been trying hard to avoid reviewing the Shaolin Temple Trilogy. I fully realized there was no way around it... and yet, I hemmed and hawed. In a way, it’s like writing a book about Rock’n’Roll... and getting to the Elvis chapter.

A nightmare.

I mean, what can you possibly write that some other guy hasn’t writ...Read more

YOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYONE

German Stunt Biz Situation Report

One of my first blog entries here on AnD was titled WORKING AS A STUNTMAN IN CHINA and it dealt with... well, alright, the title kind of gives it away. That little sit rep was written from a foreigner’s perspective, of course... an expat’s, if you will, (yes, mine , smartypants) although it marginally dipped into the tough lives of Chinese stunt performers, as well.

I’m back in Germany now (I have been since May 2008), and thu...Read more
