I was checking out Vanness Wu's blog, and was guided to the genius known as Beau Sia (谢福源). Some of my faves:

    Hi everyone, I'm Sonia.

So, I will take a cue from the blogs I've been reading and try to write in both English and Chinese as much as possible. You'll have to excuse the crappiness of my Chinese, and I can't promise literal translations.

I originally joined AnD because I watch Wu Di's youtube videos. For those of you who don't know him, check him out at http://www.youtube.com/user/invinciblespear. I peg him as a future star. Now I don't know much about Wushu so I can only trust his word, and the reputation of the Beijing Wushu Team, that he's good. There are plenty of people out there who can (currently) sing, dance, act, and look better than he can. Furthermore, I'm not particuarly fond of the whole urban/hip-hop thing that he seems pretty into. So what do I see in him?

Well, first of all, gut feeling. I just took an instant liking to him. And who doesn't love looking at Chinese Martial Arts?

A more rational set of reasons would be that he's got a knack for self-marketing and self-presentation:

    1. He keeps all of his videos and blogs (AnD, sohu, myspace, xanga, youtube...wow!) up-to-date.
    2. He always remembers to thank his fans.
    3. He learned English (incredibly well considering that he learned only by watching movies, or so he claims.), and makes sure to communicate in both languages.
    4. He's made friends from all around the world, and kept them.
    5. He is enthusiastic about showing of ALL of his talents, yet manages to remain unobnoxious.

A lot of these seem like common sense, yet not many people manage to remember to do them.

For example, take a look at his audition on Jackie Chan's Disciple. I can't judge his Drunken Sword or his acting, but what impressed me was that (as a Chinese contestant) he first introduced himself in English without prompting from the judges. He was confident, prepared and concise, and not cocky. In terms of first impressions, he appeared both boyishly endearing and professional at the same time. This is in stark contrast to the behaviors of other contestants, thus making Wu Di stand out. Of course, he dropped out later, but that's besides the point.

As a team captain, he's got responsibilities. As an athlete, he's got discipline. As a practitioner of an ancient art of an an ancient culture, he's got roots and traditions. Yet he's remained young, hip, and modern. And I think that blend certainly works to his advantage.

At any rate, I think he's got potential to be marketable once he retires from the sports scene.

    Alright, enough of fan-girl ravings.

After browsing AnD for a while, I've realized how much I've been missing out. This is a great place to get a more personal feel for (Asian and up-and-coming) artists. Hope to meet more friends out there.

Not much to write right now. I just watched 武术之少年行. It was cute, maybe lacking a bit of polish and sophistication, but it's refreshing to have a coming-of-age action film involving fresh faces and believable modern-day martial arts for once.
