A kind hearted soul returned from an overseas trip and told me that he had given some money to a foreigner (whose nationality I will not reveal) in Bangkok airport.  When I probed further, the kind soul revealed that the foreigner claimed that he had lost his pouch containing the money he brought for the overseas trip and took out his passport and air ticket to proof that he was indeed a traveller.

I reminded the kind soul that he had given money to  two other foreigners in Jakarta Airport who claimed that they were stranded at the airport with no money and kins in Indonesia to help them.  They too showed their passport and return air ticket.  What came to mind was why these foreigners did not approach the embassy or officials at the airport for their plead but instead went around asking for extension.  Also, why would there be a need for money at the airport when they could simply board a flight back to their hometown with the return ticket.

What would you have done if people appraoch you at the airport or anywhere else with similar pleads?

Interesting blog.  I always try to think that people have the best intentions, but this sounds fishy.  You are a good friend to point that out to him.

A similar (but not exact) thing happens here.. but it is more obvious.. a person will stand near a street corner with a sign that reads "Stranded, ran out of gas.. please help" or something to that effect. Unfortunately, most of these people are just looking for a "hand-out".. some have been seen dining in quality restaurants, wearing nice clothing the following day. Unfortunately, there are people out there who try to and can, move the generosity of others, where it is to their personal benefit.

This is one of the oldest tricks in the book!  If YOU have an abundance of cash on hand then, be my guest, help these people gain more money, but otherwise, unless their crying, they look like they haven't eaten in days, etc.  I would be very cautious.  I will say, as an American, I can attest to the fact that the U.S. Government is no so ready to help all U.S. citizens abroad.  I had my passport stolen along with my wallet in Germany, and the Yanks told me that I shouldn't have gone to Germany.  The fact that they sent me there to begin with in 1982 with the U.S. Army didn't seem to interest them any.  When it comes right down to it, all I can say is, be very weary of Westerners, because they would lie through their teeth to get something that they really want, or feel they deserve, and they are the biggest back-stabbers out there!  No, that's not every Westerner, but my experience tells me that it's an overwhelming majority.  Good luck getting any money back!
