Joel-Peter Witkin 是90年代中期的攝影藝術工作者。他的作品展現出的風格並非是大家眼中、腦中、觀念中所想像的風景、人文、建築或是商品。他拍攝的主要方向是人像，但是他鏡頭中的主角並非是活生生的人類。在他的作品構圖的主角是一具具的屍體與社會陰暗面的人，包括侏儒、陰陽人，與帶著SM風格佈置的格局。
Joel-Peter Witkin稱他們為「帶有基督的傷痕」，具有「肉體的奇蹟」之人。他的作品常出現具有複雜的歷史背景構圖，然後將聖經、或者神話故事裡的主角，替換成他那些「帶有肉體奇蹟」的主角。是猥褻，還是崇敬？看你從誰的角度看來。從基督教徒或者教會的角度看來，會笑的出來的，大概一個也沒有。從那些因為天生具有「上帝的傷痕」而無法被接受的人們眼中看來，Witkin為他們寫出了他們的「聖經」
