  • Birth of a Skyscraper - Opernturm

    Saturday, Jul 19, 2008 4:43AM / Standard Album / Opernturm / Members only
    31 pictures / 1984 views

As I promised, I took the first pics of the construction site of the Opernturm (in english: opera tower) and I'll add some more from time to time.
This got to be a  long term project, because the laying of the foundation stone was in August 2007 and the construction may last till 2009!
At the moment they work 24/7 which is essential to the success to the construction. So the plattform around the elevator and supply wells will move upwards continously so that the nucleus will be poured in one piece...

Update: On 15th Dec. 2007 they almost finished 5th storey of the scyscraper and 2nd storey of the entrance building

Update: 09. Feb. 2008: third storey of the basement building completed...

Update: 24. Feb. 2008: Start of another storey for the basement building
Thread about the project on the Deutsche Architektur Forum (german architecture forum) with a lot more pics and information (in german)
Also the Strabag (the construction company) webcam archive for the construction site - check it out!

    Update: 03. March 2008:
    Architect: Prof. Mäckler, Frankfurt
    Project Developer: Tishman Speyer
Added animation of the completed project.
Completion estimated for 3rd quarter of 2009

Update 15. March 2008: 5th storey of the basement building completed and the next already started.

Update 31. March 2008: Two storeys of the basement buildings got windows.

Update 19. April 2008: Basement builsing almost completely fitted with windows. The highrise is growing.

Update 31. Mai 2008: More than 50% of the storeys already constructed! As I read in a newspaper they only need four to five days for one storey!!!

    Update 15. July 2008: Already 122 m done!

Seems they pour concrete day and night in China.  I reckon they would have twice as many floors done by now.  But one wonders about the safety.

That's why buildings get done quicker with you. I've never seen builders at work during the night or weekends here.

Interesting.  I've been following the progress of a building outside our apartment window for more than a year now.  Lately, it doesn't seem to change much, but during the concrete stage, I was shooting every week.

It's nice to leave some space around the building that will always ensure light.

Very good question Flag  - 100 points!: No it's not the new opera, it's just on the other side on the street of the "Old Opera" a big concert hall in Frankfurt...

What does it have to do with Opera? Is it the new opera house?
