  • Absurd Creativity

    Sunday, Nov 1, 2009 12:06AM / Members only

I can't help but being thrilled about how a totally unrelated and probably illogical story could influence our perception of a new product. It is absurd yet it somehow captures your mind, perhaps, for just a while. Yet, I value the creativity put into linking up the story. Could I call this 'Absurd Creativity'?

Does it feel like some toy story that you mumbled to yourself when you were young? E.g. "Hey mum, did you see that I just fry the eggs? This is the burger (burger toy) that I made."

  • Homely Halloween

    Saturday, Oct 31, 2009 8:36PM / Members only

I realised the weather has been so exceptional cooling today that I shun all public places by 8pm after My Sister's Keeper (2009) movie with my dearest cousin and went back home to chill. Not answering any 'trick or treat'. :)

I am actually quite proud of these pictures that was taken while on an unpublished independent film project. It was in 2005 if I'm not wrong. I had this make-up on for almost 10 hours and had blemishes for a week. I had my fair share of fun, so no regrets! I am still thankful to Edric for sending me these memorable photos!

Shall put it up here to share, just for fun. My nails have yet to turn black!

  • Jane Lee at Osage Gallery Singapore

    Saturday, Oct 10, 2009 10:01PM / Members only

Usually I tend to appreciate processes or the technicalities that goes into an artwork or a creative production, as compared to seeing the final product or artwork at status quo.

Maybe because I enjoy seeing some form of ʻactionʼ and changes throughout a certain time frame. I was taught some background of Art History/Theory back in University and has always enjoyed the way colours are mixed and being applied on different materials rather than the dry concept and theories that have developed. So, in a way, I have the 'start creating now' mentality.

Osage Gallery in Singapore is actually just a few steps away from Sinema Old School. Currently, Osage Gallery has 6 galleries spread throughout Hong Kong, Singapore and China. I have always enjoyed Osage Gallery's model of not just being a commercial gallery, but it has strong curatorial aspect of introducing International and Asia artists. Osage can also be found in alivenotdead.com/osage.

I have also visited their Hong Kong branch over at Kwun Tong's Kian Dai Industrial Building in Jan 2009. Its tall ceiling amazed me. Currently, Mr. Eugene Tan (previously co-curator of Singapore Biennale 2006) is the Director of Programmes.

I discovered and followed Ms. Jane Lee's (b. 1963) works since I was in University. I came from the same University as Ms. Lee's and I am always intrigued by how my seniors or fellow schoolmates make their art or films accessible to audience. Jane Lee was also involved in the first Singapore Biennale in 2006. See here for an article and picture of Ms. Lee.

I think art appreciation has got to do with the personality of the observer. I love rich colours and enjoy the process of an artwork changing, just like the red and purple artworks. They are all moving towards gravity. No one knows what it will look like for the next 48 hours. Isn't it surprising whenever you visit the gallery again? Where do the 'dropping' paint eventually end up?

  • ARTSingapore 2009 Opening

    Wednesday, Oct 7, 2009 11:14PM / Members only

Attended the opening of ARTSingapore (7 Oct - 12 Oct) at Suntec Singapore Exhibition Centre. ARTSingapore is the only Contemporary Asian Art Fair in Singapore held every year. You can expect to see contemporary artworks ranging from sculptures, paintings and photography.

One of my favourite artists is Mr. Richard Winkler (b. 1969). He is represented by Zola Zolu Gallery. Mr. Winkler studied graphic design and illustration at the Beckmans School of Design in Stockholm. Later in 1997, he moved to Bali and became a full-time painter. Currently, he lives with his Chinese Indonesian wife and two daughters. Besides painting on canvas, he has recently created bronze figurines.

In his subject, women are usually depicted with mother nature. It is always very relaxing when I see his paintings. It has very 'clean' lines with nice shades. He says he took about 6 months for a big painting size like 1.5 x 2 metres. Of course, there are others that I like but due to copyright issues, I will only upload selected pictures here!

  • Singapore Slingers (Basketball Team)

    Sunday, Oct 4, 2009 10:34PM / Members only

Sports that are predominently "men sports" such as soccer, football and basketball are sports that are somewhat 'neutral' to me. But when it comes to local teams, I will be glad to lend my cheering hand, and even more to Singapore Slingers, part of ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) and first professional basketball team for Singapore.

This was my first time experiencing a live match; Singapore Slingers-versus-Philippines San Miguel Beermen with at least 1,500 other supporters at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Singapore Indoor Stadium is a common venue where usually pop concerts are also held by pop singers like Ah Mei, David Tao, Stefanie Sun, Jackie Cheung, Linkin Park etc.

Initially, it was a little daunting to be seated just behind the basket where all the intense action and adrenalin at its climax. I was able to see the faces of these tall players and how they fascinate me with their defence and attack motions. It was actually quite a close shave! Singapore Slingers beat San Miguel 71-65! Hooray!

It was indeed a good weekend to experience something new, something local... and for all I know, I took back with a barrel of golden postive team spirit to strive for the best.

I'm glad I made this trip to support them as the Philippines supportes are overwhelming! Way to go, Singapore Slingers!
