"A northeaster (nor'easter) is a winter storm that forms in the mid-latitudes between the months of September and April. Nor'easters travel northward in the Atlantic Ocean, with winds blowing towards the shore along the eastern United States and Canadian coastlines. Because of the cyclonic nature of the storm system, the winds blow in a northeastward direction, affecting long reaches of the coastline while the storm is still far to the south. Nor'easters tend to be very large and move slowly, generating high waves that attack the shoreline for long periods of time. The onshore directed winds accentuate the incoming tide, while confining the excess water at the shoreline during a low tide stage. Because nor'easters move slowly, several tidal cycles can be affected, creating a large coastal storm surge."

A nor'easter blew thru several days ago. We didn't get the worst of it in NJ, but it was a pretty dramatic storm. I couldn't resist going to see the ocean. It was churned up & lashing the shore...

The wind had been really strong the nite before. A couple of feet of sand accumulated in some places on the boardwalk...

Big chunks of this old pier broke off & washed up on the shore...

There can be a fine line between having an ocean view & being part of the ocean...

Every time a nor'easter blows thru the coastline changes as the ocean claims the land..

No matter what the weather there are surfers who'll go out...

    ..and crazy fishermen!

There are houses on the shore of Lake Michigan all propped up like this. In a couple places, there's the REMAINS of houses that came down the dunes. I guess that's the risk one takes, eh?

Peachey- i understand lots of places are passing setback regulations specifying how much land must be left to rebuild. if there isn't enough, the lot is declared unbuildable & the owners are sol.

Daan-i'm not a great photographer, i'm a poacher lol. i got the pics from the weather channel tweet site, ppl took them & sent them in. how convenient they photographed the very place i was haha.

Flag, lol yes, i HAD to go. i was standing with a lot of other lemmings who felt the same burning need, but believe me i hung back a bit. a few (fool)hardy folks marched right up to the water's edge to get photos. yikes.

These oceanfront properties are just a tad too close to the sea for comfort.

I was wondering about you lady.  We have been out of touch for a couple of days.  Great pictures.  You HAD to go see it?  What if a rogue wave would`ve swept you away?  Who`d be snarky then?  lol
