a lot of you didn't know this, but China has a "NEW BEAT". Both literally, and figuratively this is true, a lot of good things going on here. Last night I went to a dancehall/reggae party at the Shelter and danced from 12-5:30am...so much that today my knees hurt. The chunes were wicked!
I thought that this graphic was pretty fresh, it is the logo of a local jazz school for kids. It has an interesting aesthetic, looks some what West Indian or Jamaican to me. I thought it was an unusual fit for China.

Whenever I am feeling a bit 'down and out' or a bit homesick I have to watch a movie that reminds me of home. Tonight I watched, Downtown 81, by far not a great film, but one that sums up a city, a day in the life of of the seminal artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, and a particular period in time.
"I'm an artist. When you tell people that they usually say, 'what's your medium?' I usually say, 'extra large.' " - Jean-Michel Basquiat.
quite a beautiful day today! not at all warm, but at least the skies were crisp and blue.
damn, I am glad that V-day is over, it is way too over rated. Okay, I am going to be honest, I am just hating my Valentine's day was pretty uneventful. Well, that is not completely true. I did watch a series of interesting and inspiring shorts by David Lynch. If you can, pick up a copy or check you tube...good stuff!

While in NY I totally forgot to visit one of my favorite galleries. To my dismay, I returned to Shanghai only to find that they actually have some pretty good exhibitions on-going. 7 days in NY is just not enough! If you happen to be in New York definitely check out the Dietch Projects downtown. A few notable artist got their big break there.

I am happy to say, that I am back home in Shanghai with my 100+ records that I converted from analog to digital. Now it is time to drop the needle.
I am sure that you have heard of bedroom dj's, well I have now been upgraded to the status of a dining room dj. Well, not really, my set up just happens to be in my dining room. If I ever grow up and have a real relationship, I guess I will have to move it to another room, no respectable woman likes a man with turntables in his dining room?

I came across it at this shop near my old stomping grounds on 29th street, the shop's name is DU-ALL Camera... http://www.duallcamera.com Upon my return to China, I hope to have a bit of spare time and mind space to use it to bring life to a few old ideas.

i finally made my long awaited visit the the relaunching of the New Museum, downtown on Bowery. I must say that the new identity is on point, the building is amazing, the website is cool. But the curation SUCKS!!! Big disappointment for 12 'hard earned' $US recession dollars. ehhhh, check it out anyway. LOL
