  • The study of beauty

    Sunday, Jul 26, 2009 4:49PM / Members only

All those here who aspire to the 'beauty' of fashion and fame, heed these thoughts:

"For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror which we are barely able to endure, and it amazes us so, because it serenely disdains to destroy us." — Prague poet Rainer Maria Rilke, Duino Elegies, 1922

"The study of beauty is a duel in which the artist screams with fear before being defeated." French poet Charles Baudelaire, Paris Spleen, 1864.

Oh there is something I should have said already:

    - COMIC BOOKS ARE NOT AND NEVER HAVE BEEN 'JUST FOR KIDS' !

There is a widely held image, especially in the UK and USA, that comic books are for children and are inherently an immature art form. Thankfully this is 100% wrong and just a stereotypical image, not the reality. Just like you can make films for adults and films for children, or music for adults or music for children, so you can make comics aimed at adults, as well as those aimed at children. That's it, simple. It all depends on the story content, level of sophistication, and the language used.

In fact, there's a pretty good case to be made that comic books are often MORE intelligent, subtle and sophisticated than many films. Because they don't have the constraints of having to raise a huge budget and draw in big box office returns. So they are not so tied to a narrow focus on whats been tried and tested and will work in the market place. Which means they can be more experimental, go into issues in a deeper way, and really express what it's creators want to say.

So, for anyone out there who is silly enough to still think comics are a kids medium, then, as they say:  'Get with the programme!' and go to check out some modern graphic novel comic books - they have lots of them in Page One bookstore in HK.

  • Hong the Kong and Bespoke Comic Books

    Friday, Jun 26, 2009 11:21AM / Members only

I'm off, again, to Hong Kong next week (2nd to 8th July).

Hoping to finish writing the script for the story set there, THE STORY OF LEE, while i'm actually in HK. Well i'm up to page 119 today, out of 150. So should be ok. Plus, of course, i will take IPPAI/LOTS more reference photos. Look out for real HK places and people in the book when it comes out... and here below is another page from the book, page 58 this time - with an event place building in panel 2 that most HK people on aliveenotdead should recognise! (so, what is it then?)

I decided to increase an aspect of something that I've done a few times before, which is the more 'commercial' side of comic books made for companies and indiviudals for promomotion or personal reasons, called BESPOKE COMIC BOOKS:

"AT BESPOKE COMIC BOOKS (BCB) WE OFFER TAILOR MADE COMIC BOOKS, MANGA AND GRAPHICS ESPECIALLY MADE TO TELL YOUR STORY. BESPOKE COMICS AND CARTOONS CREATED FOR YOU THAT VISUALISE YOUR COMPANY, ORGANISATION, FAMILY OR LIFE STORY. TELLING A STORY VISUALLY HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR BOTH MASS APPEAL AND INTIMACY OF APPROACH. LET YOUR MESSAGE COME ALIVE BY HAVING IT ILLUSTRATED! "

  • New pages from the HK story

    Monday, Jun 15, 2009 1:54PM / Members only

Some new pages from my HK set story 'SOL'. This scene is a wordless one in which one of the characters spends a lonely evening. I just passed the 100 page mark on writing the script yesterday. So, only 50 more page to go.

Can anyone on alivenotdead work out the road in HK that these two pages are set on?- the streetside cafe and DVD shop are both real ones. Sorry, not much to go on wiht just these two pages, but soon i will upload some ones that give better clues...

    Hugs, Sean Michael

  • Spring inside

    Tuesday, Apr 28, 2009 12:10PM / Members only

Not been on here for a while, but now Im back.

Southern Japan in spring is so beautiful, for a Scottish man from cold Northern Europe it feels like being on holiday in the sun in the beaches of Spain  or the narrow pretty streets of Italy - everyday!

I've been working away on my various books:

    - 'Hagakure' for Kodansha in Tokyo is going well, I've ben coming up with some pretty good ways to visualise this historical book, and its a buzz t come up with good creative ideas, right?

    - My comic book version of 'Buskers' is now 100% finished, and the soundtrack for the film version is now being recorded by Damon Alburn, from the band BLUR. Groovy...

    - 'The Story of Lee', set in HK, is about half done now, i attach some pages from it here - its set specifically mostly in Chai wan! Those of you who know that area will spot many real local places in it, like Chai Wan park and Ken's cafe.

    - 'AX collection' book is just over half done. I was 'chuffed' last month to see the US publisher's press release that has my name right next to my childhood comic book influences like Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, who they are also publishing this year. Amazing to think that I am now within the same publishing house as my childhood heroes!

    Hugs,
    Sean Michael

Hi Sean, the only difference in the 2 countries I'd say is the pace. Taiwan is rather mellow compared to HK :)

I barely able to upload photo of the most recent trip, one album for each city and so far, 2 down...so many more to go so Scotland has to wait because sorting those out are even harder. I'm so sorry Sean; things are so hectic with work that I'm so behind on messages. I hope all are well with you.
    More soon...
