Communicating over IM can be a risky business....

My friend and I were chatting about a mutual friend over yahoo im this weekend.  We were all suppose to meet up for brunch on Sunday but the mutual friend bailed because her husband's grandpa passed away.  The death was unexpected so she had to cancel our brunch last minute.   So, my friend and I were chatting about when to reschedule the brunch.  I wrote over im "it's always ****, she always bails on us or flake out"  (in a helpless tone).  But my friend took it the wrong way, thought I'm pissed at our friend.  She said to me, her husband's grandpa died!!!

Ai-ya....  this is totally a misunderstanding... I scrolled up our chat window and re-read our conversation, I realized, since she couldn't hear the tone of my voice, by just reading the words, I sounded like such a b-tch.

After I explained, everything is okay now.... But that feeling of being misunderstood still lingers.  I still feel horrible....

Have you ever had this happen to you? Your words didn't come out right over IM?...

    still bummed ><

yep, have definitely experienced miscommunication on IM or email. a few times, I mistook a friend's short and abrupt IM msgs and replies for being bored or upset. but he later explained that he's just not one to express much emotion online.

yeah, there have been miscommunications via email/ msn before... it's tough b/c communication is much more than words... the tone of voice, the character of the person, even body language all come into play. in the virtual world, these are lacking...

Communicating by writing can be tricky. Can be easy to misconstrue the real meaning.

I usually try to put in emo-icons when IMing.  Like Angela said, it's hard to explain in writing.  Once you explain to them what you meant, everything should be fine.

I'm sure if they really knew you, they would have known you didn't mean it that way.  It's always tougher to explain things in writing, people know that.  Don't worry too much!
