Went to the NBA launch party last week which was fun. It's always great catching up with everyone and watching Jin plus 24 Herbs bust out some good HK hip-hop. The Herbs are working on new stuff which should be out soon and Jin is promoting his new mixtape so support yo!
The other night a handful people were invited to King Ly Chee's practice room for a special performance of their new songs. It was the first time anyone got to hear their new tunes along with a new line-up. What a good way to warm up for their Philippines tour too. If you live in the Philippines check out their shows and if not catch KLC with Have Heart (from Boston) on May.10th. More info here.
The new songs sounded awesome and it was great watching them while crammed into their practice space along with the guys from Shepherds the Weak & Qui Hong. Good times!
I picked up the "From the Basement" DVD the other day and it kicks @ss! Its a TV show created by Nigel Godrich who's known for producing Radiohead, Beck, Paul McCartney, Pavement, and mixing U2 albums. The show features straight to the point HD footage of each act playing their tunes with the best live studio set up possible. My favorite parts are Radiohead, The Shins, Thom Yorke, Jose Gonzales, and Albert Hammond Jr., Jamie Lidell, and Beck. Check it out!
No filler all killer! Just clean performances and no clutter.
I guess this is the closest I can get to Radiohead and Thom Yorke unless Patrick Lee starts another group and tries to brings them out to HK. He's currently trying to bring Weezer out so support by joining the group here.
Lately I've been really into The Umbrella Academy series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba. Released by Dark Horse comics the story is about six extraordinary kids that were adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves and raised to save the world. 20 years later and after their father's death they are brought back together again and forced to work out their dysfunctional family issues while trying to save the planet from the White Violin. The first story "The Apocalypse Suite" won a 2008 Eisner award and features cool covers by James Jean and the legendary Jim Lee. Very cool stuff.....
Its been a while since I got into a new series and I'm pretty stoked on the story and artwork.
The second story now in progress "Dallas" takes some interesting twists and the character development gets even better.
James Jean did some covers and his art is insane. He's starting to get a lot of recognition for his work and just had an amazing show at Jonathan Levine Gallery. Check it out here.
The artwork handled by Gabriel Ba is mind blowing and just makes the story even better. I just love the flow.
Check out this Peter, Bjorn, and John video for "Nothing to Worry About." It features the Japanese greasers that are found dancing around Yoyogi Park in Harajuku. It's freakin' classic!
