Gibson Masterbuilt !!!

A few weeks ago Gibson master luthier Ren Ferguson came to town and shared his experiences of being one of the driving forces behind the Gibson Montana factory. Pretty much every Gibson acoustic is made by hand from their plant. Ren spoke about getting to work with some of the best players while making special one-off guitars for their thousands of clients. He's even spent a lot of time flying around the world picking out special woods to create these works of art. It was a treat to meet him again and to hear the stories behind the Super Doves and Super Humminbirds that he produced with Tom Lee this year.This time around Ren brought 6 Super Hummingbirds, 6 Super Doves, and 3 Specially carved L5 acoustics from thier custom shop. The wood used in each guitar was hand picked by Ren and he personally worked on the fretboard and pick guard designs. During his visit last year he brought thirteen SJ-200s (my favorites) each with a Chinese zodiac character.Joey Tang rockin' a couple of tunes.The new arrivals! Each guitar was a one-off with some unique wood combinations. Some the special woods included Zebra Wood, Palo Escrito, Ziricote, Movingui, Quilted Bubinga, Malaysian Blackwood, Macassar Ebony, Madagascar Rosewood, and Indian Rosewood.Each "super" guitar had a lot of mother of peal detail and had a unique sound since each one had a different mix of backs and sides. We were also allowed to play each one and compare!Some of the guitars Ren has made in the past have had over 200 pieces of mother of pearl and abalone inlay. He's even been know to spend more than 200 hours on a guitar and some went for as high as $100,000 usd!
After the show Joey, Ren, Frank Lee, and the rest of the crew went out for some really good hot pot. The fish heads were gone in no time...haha!

HK Art Fair 2009 !!!

Last Thursday we went down to the HK Art Fair and got to check out some great stuff while catching up our good friend Simon Birch. This was the art fair's second year which had over 110 galleries from all around the world showing pieces by some truly amazing artists. I was really taken back by how many big names and up and coming artist had stuff available for you to purchase and see in the flesh. Definitely a real treat!The main entrance was sure to get your attention with the giant Mu Boyan piece!Watch out kiddies ...
One of the first things you got to see was Julian Opie's work which was a big focus of the show.Watcha looking at?
There were several Warhols available and it's always a treat to see his work in the flesh. Imagine having one of these in your house. Amazing!

It was nice meeting up with Simon Birch and seeing what he's been up to. He had some great stuff up and just got back from Miami the night before. Thanks for hooking us up man!I love the details and layering in his work. He's got some cool stuff in the pipeline too!
Richard Prince. We just saw his stuff at the Serpentine Gallery in London last August and he killed it. Louis Vuitton is show his stuff along with Takashi Murakami and Frank Gehry this week at the HK Museum of Art so don't miss out!
This was my first time seeing Kieth Haring in the flesh. I've been a big fan of his pop art since the early 80's.Getting up close and personal with one of my favorites - Yoshitomo Nara!An original Takashi Murami piece. He rarely uses his image in his paintings so it was a treat to see him and Mr.Dob chillin with a background of his famous flowers.Akira Yamaguchi He always meshes old school japaese art with various hi-tech machinery in the details. His book is worth checking out too.I blogged about Tenmyouya Hisashi last year so I was glad to finally see his work in person. I would have loved to buy that dragon piece on gold leaf....keep dreamin'...I missed Masakatsu Sashie at Giant Robot LA so I was happy to see one of his orbs here. I still have the orb resin kit that I picked up in Tokyo but I'm too scared to paint it.Damien Hirst in full effect! I would've loved to see his "Freeze" animals there.
Some other pieces I liked. There was so much stuff that I ran out of batteries in my camera! It was so cool because when you go to museums they don't usually let you take pics (I remember getting yelled at in Paris). So next year you gotta check out the art fair and just take in all the great stuff.

Party like it's 2009 !!!

I just wanted to take a minute to give props to the Alivenotdead crew for keeping this amazing community going and for doing their best to help promote the local music scene. I was glad to be apart of the show last week and was stoked to play with such talented musicians and friends. Hopefully everyone can keep pushing each other to do bigger and better things in the years to come. Much respect!F.B.I. did a good set was entertaining to watch.My first time watching Gong Wu rock out.

Alivenotdead 2nd Anniversary Party !!!

The Alivenotdead 2nd anniversary party is this weekend and it's going to be insane.
Hardpack, 24 Herbs, Josie, FBI, Eccentric, and a bunch of other bands including myself will play so come down and rock out. Good tunes, good peeps, and a good cause!

Went to the NBA launch party last week which was fun. It's always great catching up with everyone and watching Jin plus 24 Herbs bust out some good HK hip-hop. The Herbs are working on new stuff which should be out soon and Jin is promoting his new mixtape so support yo!
