To Believe Or Not (Pascal's Wager)

What kind of highflown idea am I getting into, talking about Pascal's Wager!   Me, a person who is averse to numbers!  Blaise Pascal was a famous mathematician in the 17th century, and the founder  of the mathemathical Theory Of Probability.  In the wager, Pascal  was speaking of when one is considering if one should put faith in Jesus, 2 factors may be considered rationally: the value of what you stand to gain or lose by believing or not, and the  probability that it is true , and which then determines if you will receive the benefits of this belief.

The Bible says that if you believe in Jesus as the Son of God and he is to be Lord of your life, you will have some costs ( in foregoing the pleasures of sin, in the effort of striving to do good); but  you will have eternal life with God, a benefit of infinite value.  If you do not believe, you will enjoy whatever you wish to while you are alive, but you will go to a place of torture and be forever separated from God.

Suppose there is only one chance in a billion that Jesus is who the Bible says he is. Then it is still absolutely worthwhile to believe in Jesus: because, what it costs you to be a follower of Jesus is  very, very small, compared to the chance of  a reward of infinite value. Only those who are absolutely certain that the Bible is false ( who can give 0 probability to its truth), can rationally choose to disbelieve. For others faced with Pascal's Wager ( and everyone is), the rational  way of counting the cost always leads to trusting in Jesus.

Can anyone afford to take a chance?  Are you very certain that the Bible is untrue in its statements about God?  My humble and simple opinion is this: after all, we do buy insurance, even for the risks of travelling. to ensure a safe and certain arrival at our destination.

Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 所 以 , 你 們 若 真 與 基 督
