Seeing Red....

I have  asked myself , "Why  the red banner over the main doorway  of a Chinese household with a marriage to celebrate? (like an inverted U)." This red banner is also draped during Chinese New Year by some. We Chinese believed from ancient times,  that the monster  'Nian' was afraid of the color red, and would therefore not harm the people within the doorway with the red banner. Eventually red became a celebratory color. This is what I see in the tradition.

I wonder if there is a connection.......

In the Bible, Exodus12:22  ,God instructed Moses that each household were to slaughter a lamb without blemish,  and apply its blood over the sides and top of the doorframe( that is, like an inverted U) .  If you remember, the mass of descendants of Jacob had been enslaved in the land of Egypt, and Pharoah would not let them go, despite the plagues that were inflicted on the land and nation  by God. This was the final plague, the death of the firstnorn.

In v 23b, " When  Yahweh( the LORD)  goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down." v24" Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for your and your descendants." v27 "then tell them this is the Passover sacrifice to Yahweh, who passed over the houses of the israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians."Note this was the Passover sacrifice.. the spotless lamb slain to provide the protective cover.

So the Israelites left the land of slavery and oppression,  and went out to the Land that God had promised  them through their ancestors Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And the people became a nation in the desert before their entry into the Promised Land. Do you see the miracle of the re-born nation of Israel in 1948?  As someone has said, the existence of Israel testifies to the existence and faithfulness of God.
