Wow, I watched Shinjuku Incident 新宿事件 yesterday..... marvellous movie. At the end of the movie, you only have a conclusion - dispiriting.
This is one of those movies which focus your mind on the plot, the characters & the emotions. You totally forget about the movie's technical performances like photography, directing or editing at the end of the movie as you were too engrossed in the story. It was real and depressing. You realise that people who used to be simple and undemanding becomes greedy & aggressive after they gain power & money.
Surprisingly, Jackie Chan's acting was more outstanding than Daniel Wu's in this show. I was wondering why when I read the paper's review this morning that Daniel's character has too short a transition to the change in his temperament, whereas Jackie had more scenes to share his emotional ups & downs with the audience. In fact, all the actors' performance were so good. They all could deliver the characters' personality & emotions seamlessly. This is really rare in movies nowadays.
I really think the directing was awesome, in fact better than The Protege. The fighting scenes were photographed with fast sweeps to create the sense of chaos & panic but while these sweeps were executed, I captured one moment when Jackie Chan's facial expression was featured for a second or two. That was surprising and impressive. The director actually remembers to let the audience see the apprehension that the character is experiencing. When you see it, you feel it.....
However, I can't get over the fact that Daniel Wu's chopped off hand looked fake, haha! It looked rubbery lah.... If you cannot stand chopping off hands, intestines fell out of the stomach, then not advisable for you to watch. Otherwise, you should watch it!
