Tinlunlau:  I share your sympathies, but sadly it is almost everywhere now. Since coming to HK, that's probably the only thing I found that really bugs me.....that living expenses in HK, especially rental/mortgages are sooo expensive! Nowhere in the world is it as expensive...

One thing I've totally disliked over the years is the fact that property developers make a ton of cash out of it and let people suffer. My dad has always said, property is the basis of peoples needs on Earth, just like food, water and air.......and it should not be used as a commodity for gain.

To charge extortionate amounts for it....for the very space we stand on (or making a life out of it) I think, is truly a crime......(almost) against humanity. It is as worse as war (where you are making a living out of the innocent and fragile), and it simply shouldn't be allowed. Not in an advanced developing society I think.

Let me give you an example of what I mean by extortionate amounts. Do you remember the incident last year where the owners of a HK building convened in a local meeting, and were told they had to pay a total of $1bn HK$ (together as a group) to renovate the entire building? Imagine that some of those old people in that meeting were your parents. Imagine they had worked their whole life.....saved up for, and paid for an apartment in that building, and now were retired and planned to live out the rest of their days in that flat. Now imagine as owners of that building, they had been given a notice that because of some 'cosmetic' issues, you had to pay for $100,000,000 HK$ just to rebuild their flat. And it was mandatory...that you were forced to pay for it. Where the hell are your parents gonna find that money at their age, especially after retirement? Wouldn't such a thing make you furious? Sadly this was exactly what went on......such practices must be stopped, because by supporting such a system we are fueling greed.

I've always said....if government policies and landlords/developers were fairer (charging a low standard price for rent/property across HK, or even none at all), we need not struggle as a people and as a race, because after all everything that happens in society....filters back down to us younger generations eventually and we are end up as the ones who end up paying for it. It is people like property developers who are extremely arrogant and selfish, who are the ones to blame who have made people's lives miserable and kept society from developing further.

    damn...close to 8 grand a month....
that's exactly $1084.53 canadian (i checked thru xe.com).  twice as much as the rental costs that EMP offered me last time for a small shanty apartment near their offices in wanchai.  and even then, i was stinging out on $4000/month.

living expenses is so expensive in HK...
