  • street fighter 4 review

    Wednesday, Apr 22, 2009 3:03PM / Standard Entry

bought street fighter 4 for my brother's birthday.  in washington state now visiting him and my sister-in-law.  my mom is also visiting so we can all spend "family time" together.

i must say, given all the hype and the high reviews for the game, i'm pretty disappointed with it.

first off, i have to admit that the last time i played street fighter seriously was way back when street fighter 2: championship edition was out.  i was a huge fan of the game up to that point.  but, when i went to college i pretty much stopped playing any of the fighting games.

second, i will say that the 3d graphics are amazing.  very very nice models.

but, outside of that, i think the game definitely had some problems --

    1) the animated sequences when you start arcade mode for any of the characters are HORRIBLE!  very low qualty animation and just not well done at all.  it would have been better to just leave it out.

    2) the opening movie quality was a lot higher, but all the effects and shadows made it really tough to tell what was going on.  definitely could have been better, especially compared to some of the opening intros in the previous street fighter games.

    3) the opening song was pretty bad.  you could tell it was a japanese song that they just replaced with english lyrics.  that very rarely works out.  i think i would have much preferred the original japanese version.

    4) ok, all the little issues aside -- the biggest problem was the animation.  like i said above, the graphics are great.  take any screenshot while you are playing the game and it looks beautiful.  the problem, though, is that the animation is too fast and too jerky.  the jumps don't have the "float" of sf2 and the animations are nowhere near as smooth.  for faster characters especially, it's hard as heck to tell what's going on.  either that or i'm just getting old and can't follow the movements anymore.

    5) lastly, the moves are too hard to execute ... especially if you don't have a street fighter style joystick.  the xbox 360 controller doesn't work well, especially for characters that need to charge.  when you can't pull off the moves well, eventually you just end up button mashing, which ends up killing the fun of the game.

my brother and i played around for about an hour and then got bored of it and stopped (plus our thumbs hurt).  one hour!!

trying to decide if it's worth buying another joystick just to play it some more....

  • new idea: fat prison

    Thursday, Apr 16, 2009 8:08AM / Standard Entry / Ideas

ok, just had a random idea.  very simple.

you know how they have fat camps?  i was thinking you could take it further (and simplify it) by having a "fat prison".

the person that wants to lose weight would signup for either a certain period of time, or a certain amount of weight to lose before being "released", or a certain amount of weight in a certain amount of time.

it would be like a real prison setup.  locked room with just a bed and toilet. leave all your belongings with us before you go in.

inside is a treadmill.  you run or walk on it.  if you want, it could be a stairmaster instead.

in order to eat, you need to use the treadmill.  you'd get a certain amount of food depending on how many calories you burned using the treadmill.  i don't know what's safe or what makes sense, but for example ... maybe you burned 1,000 calories on the treadmill....then you'd get 500 calories worth of food.

water you could get as much as you need.  maybe just have a water fountain or water dispenser in the "prison" room.

if you wanted to be nice, you could also have a tv in the prison.  the trick here is that the tv would only work while you were using the treadmill.

so basically, either you don't do anything and starve (and not have any tv).  or, you exercise and eat.  either way, you should lose weight.

oh yeah, you'd probably need a "security guard" regularly make the rounds and check the rooms to make sure people were ok.  maybe have security cameras in the rooms too.  and probably would need a doctor on staff or on call in case there were any problems.

but ya, i think it'd be pretty simple and pretty low cost to setup; and depending on what you charged it could make decent money.  and i think, theoretically, it should work, right?

click here if you live in hong kong and want to see weezer come play over here:

if we can get a few thousand people to join this group ... i'm pretty sure i can convince one of the concert promoters to bring them over.
