My blog

  • mj .... i want you back

    Saturday, Jun 27, 2009 3:31PM / Standard Entry

been listening to old mj and jackson 5 songs (and covers) while i've been working today.  my own mini-tribute.

what a sad loss.  at least he'll enter the pantheon of greats that all passed away early: elvis, princess di, james dean, marilyn monroe, bruce lee, jfk.  i bet they're partying away in heaven now, away from the sneering taunts of the media.

when i was still in elementary school, he was at his peak.  i remember back then i would daydream that he would show up at our school and i could hang out with him.

even in the 90's people were saying he wasn't cool and made fun of him and my feeling was always "dude, if he showed up right now you would be fawning all over him".

    may he rest in peace.

hmm, just wondering ... what are your favorite michael jackson songs?

    mine are:

    man in the mirror
    smooth criminal
    i want you back
    billie jean
    beat it

    here's another great song:

looking at a bunch of his videos.  i have to say that i think he looked best right around this time (early 80's).

i also saw two billboards of race, but since i was in a cab at the time, didn't have time to take photos!

  • the remixers

    Wednesday, Jun 10, 2009 8:16PM / Standard Entry / Ideas

had an idea for a new band!

basically make a band that sings remixes of songs.  what that'd be is either remixing one song and doing it in a very different style.  or, even better, working with a dj to mashup two or more songs, then practicing the mashup and performing that live!

    wouldn't that be neat?

i figure, if you wanted to be able to perform mashups of any type of songs, you'd probably need:

    1 lead male singer
    1 lead female singer
    1 rapper
    2 guitarists
    1 bass player
    1 drummer
    1 keyboard player
    1 dj

that's 9 people.  but, if you figure that the singers, rapper, and dj could also play the instruments, maybe you only need 5 very talented people.

i think they'd be pretty popular since they'd be performing songs that people already are familiar with.  and ya, maybe they couldn't sell albums of their music (since they are copyrighted songs), but i think they'd be damn popular performers!!

some examples of what i'm talking about (just imagine people performing this live):

attended the music matters conference again this year.  i have to say, while last year's conference was amazing ... this year they completely outdid themselves.  some amazing sessions this year, including terry mcbride's live mentoring sessions with mc jin and jamie callum's AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING interview and performance to close out the conference.

this year we were really honored to be much more actively involved with the conference.  first, they offered 50 free passes to official artists on alivenotdead.com -- and many of the artists on our site took advantage of this offer.  second, they had a lot of performances over the course of the three days featuring alivenotdead.com artists.  third, i was invited to speak on a panel about social networking that i think turned out pretty well despite my fear of public speaking.

from the feedback i've gotten, everyone had a good time and found the conference very useful and productive.  hopefully the music matters folks will extend the same offer next year and i hope even more official artists take advantage of the offer!

congratulations to all of the music matters team for putting on such an amazing conference.  and thanks to all the alivenotdead.com artists that attended and/or performed at the conference!  see you all next year!!
