  • KOLDCAST TV SIGNS LUMINA FOR DISTRIBUTION!

    Wednesday, Sep 16, 2009 8:57AM / Standard Entry

We are so happy to announce that cutting edge American web TV channel KoldCast TV has signed LUMINA for distribution!

“This past week has been amazing,” says LUMINA writer and director Jennifer Thym.  “Working with KoldCast TV has been fantastic and heartening - it's rare to meet people who are truly passionate about their work.  Web series is still a burgeoning medium, and KoldCast's strategy of being selective about its programming and pro-active about marketing is exactly what the field needs right now.  I'm so excited that LUMINA is now on their slate - it's a big step for a new Hong Kong production like ours!"

Marti Resteghini, VP, Network Programming at KoldCast TV, says that KoldCast has been looking for a special series with which to launch its new International channel. “LUMINA is a thrilling fairytale about love, longing and greed. It’s a timeless story that just so happens to be taking place in Hong Kong.  Jennifer Thym’s strikingly beautiful series has raised the bar for web programming - both here and abroad,” says Resteghini.

This a great partnership opportunity for us at LUMINA and we're excited to make new friends and reach more viewers.  Thank you so much to everyone who has helped spread the word about LUMINA - we wouldn't be here without all of your support!!

I know digital advances in cinema have certainly shaped my life as a director, and it's going to be amazing and refreshing to hear him talk about how beautiful storytelling doesn't have to be limited to the deep pockets of big studios.

  • Photos of D'in's new band

    Sunday, Jul 26, 2009 4:42PM / Standard Entry

On Thursday night, music producer Anton Wong and I went to see D'in's newly formed band practice in a remote warehouse in Kwun Tong.  I had heard two of the songs they'd written earlier in the week, and now, after seeing the band perform, I'm sold - no matter what direction they ultimately choose to go in, they have a bright future.

Frontman K.Lo has a gorgeous epic voice, one that can handle a raging storm of fast strung words and then soften down to purr through a soft chorus.  His piercing gaze reminds me of a young Trent Reznor.  Shu is the dandy of the group, impeccably styled with flowing curly locks any swashbuckler would be proud of; Sheung the bassist has an affable personality, and an infectious grin that completely transforms his face.

And lead guitarist D'in...  well, D'in is just damn sexy.

This band is going to be incredible.

  • Jeanne Hartman is a phenomenal acting coach

    Thursday, May 21, 2009 5:31PM / Standard Entry

    And this is why:

    1.  Jeanne gets to the point.  In the film world, time is money.  You have to learn to get to your "acting place" fast, and to do it well - and she knows that better than anyone.  Whether it's learning how to discover what's not on page (sounds strange, but it's so true) or how to push the range of your performance so you stand out in an audition, her advice was right on the money.  It made such a phenomenal difference in the actors' performances that I could not believe how much everyone had changed by the end of the two days.

    2.  Jeanne is both down to earth and incredibly talented.  She had three directors (Tony Shyu, Ezra Emerson and me, Jen Thym) in the class I was in, and none of us were "natural" acting talents, but by the end of it, I was already cooking up a short film starring us three!  JUST KIDDING!  But seriously, she treated us the same as the other actors and that made a world of difference in gaining our trust and developing our confidence to improve.  And she practices what she preaches - that gets my respect too.  :)

    3.  Jeanne trains you to be self-sufficient.  As she herself admits, this isn't the best business model, but it's fantastic for the students.  You don't walk away with just a better understanding of what to do in a specific scene or how to get to a certain emotion; you walk away with a toolbox of strategies and techniques that you can apply to acting and to so many other instances in life.

You still have a chance to meet Jeanne Hartman tonight at the Wrap Party at Hotel Panorama, and if I understood correctly, she may still have a few slots available for private coaching lessons before she returns to the US.  Don't hesitate, just do it!

And here's proof that we had alot of fun (click here to see the full album) - I MISS EVERY ONE OF YOU:  Tony, Ezra, Dez, Celina, Jeanne, Yung Yung, Grace, Jo Jo, Dom, Berton and Jason!
