  What makes it harder to write lyrics in Cantonese than Mandarin:  is it the rhymes, the tones or something else?  I'm just learning Cantonese and I continue to be amazed by what a flexible language it is and how expressive it is.  It makes it difficult, though, to really learn it as a non-native speaker (going beyond just the tourist stuff).  Also, because it is not a literary language, it seems a lot freer and more verbally expressive.  As someone who is fascinated by the verbal expressiveness of languages, Cantonese is a special case.  I don't see myself living in Hong Kong anytime soon (for more reasons than anyone wants to hear), so I just keep plugging away here on my own.  At least now I can understand words here and there when I hear people speak and I can "hear" it well enough that I can reproduce phrases, even though I don't know what they mean yet.  I'm developing an ear for the language--but understanding it is still a ways off.
