Last night's showing of Cinderella by the Hong Kong ballet was a tantalizing delight.

The debut performance of Margarita Demjanoka left the audience spellbound and captivated us all with the grace exhibited in the final pas de deux.

I do love attending the ballet but my knowledge of terms is rather dismal, though I've been trying to search for the term for one of my favourite of her displays and have been coming up with nothing.
So, I'll try and explain it as best I can, but if you know what I'm trying to say then please let me know the technical term for it - I love it!

She circles the stage in a series of pirouettes (that look like fouettes?) in a series that goes : 1 fouette, 2 fouette, 1fouette with leg raised (extreme arabesque?) and repeat.

What on earth is this called? It's extremely beautiful and she delivered flawlessly.

Oh, and there was another position where Ms. Demjanoka rested her entire body on her stomach in a backwards arch on the shoulder blades of her partner Zhen Huang.
Yes, think of the letter 'K' at an anticlockwise 45• angle, with both Demjanoka and Zhen facing forward left.
    Amazzzzing.

I really do look forward to attending more of her performances in future and highly recommend it!

  • Face of Esprit!

    2009-08-20 7:07PM / 標準BLOG

Kristina Lao and I went a-casting over the weekend, to bid for the 'Esprit Friends 2009' campaign.

We took our best faces (or the ones that looked as much like each other as possible) and Kristina's guitar, and we did a micro-duet in the chorus of a song Kristina so flatteringly wrote referencing me.

We blathered on a bit and posed like Cheshire Cats under the casting room downlights, and have crossed our fingers that we'll be considered for the campaign, which will feature eight friendship stories.

If you have a moment, please vote - we'd love your support and you KNOW it would be well awesome if we won.

    Exciting times with Esprit!

  • Steven McRae - the flying guy!

    2009-05-27 3:54PM / 標準BLOG

    Wow, wow and wow.

I was shocked, suprised, awed and delighted at the Galaxy Ballet Gala held by the Hong Kong ballet last weekend.

Yes, the dancers were all quite fantastic, being a pick of the international best, but there was one - Steven McRae - who stood out head, shoulders and torso above the others.

    Honestly, this guy can fly!!

Being a resolute ballet-o-phile (and a subscribed Friend of the Hong Kong Ballet) I watched him perform the most difficult male ballet moves like they were skips on the walk in the park.

Truly a pleasure! I’ll probably head over to Covent Garden and The Royal Ballet (UK) just to watch him there. Might as well catch some quality opera too, since it’s based at the Royal Opera House in London.

    How excitement.

The rest of the week has been spent brainstorming my new schedule (the super disciplined version) and having Kris kick my butt at the gym!

  • Welcome to the world of music

    2009-05-19 10:15PM / 標準BLOG

With my singer/songwriter sister recently moved back to Hong Kong from England, life has been a lot more musical, and better for it!

There's been a whirlwind of recording sessions, song writing, audition rehearsals for the upcoming YAF musical Sweeny Todd, and the discovery of my own personal singing path.

The beautiful performances at Le French May Opera Gala were truly a treat and inspiration, and I have since commenced singing lessons with Ms. Camille Lively at Katterwall, with a view to work towards the coloratura style of singing.

In other news, I've discovered that I have rather severe food sensitivities- most definitely to bread, and possibly to wheat in general.
Apparently this is a very common sensitivity, but it never occurred to me that I may be afflicted by it until my yoga guru friend brought it up.
My symptoms were not typically classed as severe- no anaphylaxis etc- but there was marked hypersomnia, lethargy and general irritability.
Overall, I felt tired, emotional and demotivated most of the time.

Whiiiiich, I hear you say, could just be the result of a crappy day/month BUT I removed bread from my diet and have had such suprisingly positive results that I'm making a statement about it here!

Honestly, the difference has been amazing.
Tally ho into a whole new life!!

    See you there.

  • Culture, darlings!

    2009-03-09 12:59PM / 標準BLOG / Culture, darlings!

So I've finally admitted to myself that general social acceptance is not a path I should waste any of my attention on, let alone bother treading.

Let the world churn in its tides of normalcy, drown in blind following, grow in tied steps.

I shall be over here listening to classical music.

The Arts Festival is still running, so I'm gorging myself on culture and adoring every minute of it.

No wandering intellectual stagnation in the moments of these events. No questioning, wondering, pondering what lack of depth one has to have accepted in order to maintain a life on this frequency. None of this, only happiness, fulfillment, joy in the knowledge that these few moments that make up my life have not been wasted on the inanity that society tries- and succeeds- in persuading us is acceptable.

In reality, we are glorious, we are brilliant, we are geniuses.
    We are human.
Once we break free of the cloud we shall see.

This week saw In-i, Alice in Wonderland, Agnes of God, and a brilliant night at the comedy club pass through my reality.

I must say that the most brilliant show of the lot was Agnes of God, by the HK Theater Association.
Dark, disturbing and intelligent, I was truly impressed not only by the play itself but by the caliber of the performance delivered by this Hong Kong company, and I highly recommend seeing them.

Coming up on my cultural agenda is Carmen, Princess Changping, Coldplay, Swan Lake, Hamlet, and Cats.

My cultural mailing list is growing. Hope to see you guys at some of these events!
I always aim for the Friday showing.
