I bought DVD-BOX at yesasia.com on internet about 1 month ago. I wanted a US version, coz it should have an English subtitle... but it's sold-out... and they say the next arrival of goods is uncertain. ... I couldn't wait and bought Chinese version...
It has a Chinese subtitle only ... yes, it's no wonder... natural...
I try to manage to understand the story in such a way as that, pic up Chinese letters that I can understand and run them with scene...
Though I couldn't follow details of dialogues, I could take hold on rough story. coz the story is simple... not twist. It's good for me...
There are many episodes coz it's TV series. But main-story is the conflict of the father who is the grandmaster of Wing Chun kung fu Leung Jan and his son Leung Bik. It's a remake of the movie "The Prodigal Son"(1981) that Yuen Biu starred in and he played
the son Leung Bikthe young Leung Jan. Now, Yuen Biu plays the father Leung Jan again, on this TV series! That's a kind of profound thing... The son who has the conflict with his father is played by Nicholas Tse, Anson Leung plays Nic's younger brother, the character who become villain later (his story is very sad...) is played by Sammy Hung the son of Sammo Hung. Also for other casts, there are many big names, Sammo Hung, Gordon Liu, and Ji Chuan Hwa who is a fixture on the Chinese martial arts costume pieces... oh, the character that the critically-indulged son of the boss of gangster is played by Tommy Yuen. He's ducky. ( lol )
And, Phil plays Chan Wah-shun who doorsteps to Leung Jan to want to be his disciple. His nickname is Money Changers Wah, his father is bank management on setup of this drama.
Anyway, Wah-shun is really fascinated by Wing Chun kung fu and really seized with a keen desire to be Leung Jan's disciple. Even though Leung Jan says "I never take on a disciple!", Wah-shun still says like that "That's OK, I'm satisfied just only be with you!"... SOOOOOOO CUTE!
Wah-shun is very simple, always smiling at everybody, and spreading good cheery mood. At first I think he is a bit ...er... too simple (I'm sorry, Phil). But later, when I know that he fast hoards his father's secret and still he assumes cheerfulness, I come near to be reduced to tears...
I know it on Phil's blog, Chan Wah-shun was the real life person! and he was a real Leung Jan's disciple! So Phil played his roots of martial arts, the real master of master of Wing Chun kung, how happy he was at that time! and I'm so happy for you, Phil!
Phil also did the Wing Chun kung fu advisor on this film.
And also phil did an back-ground demonstrator (by anonymous man in black) during Sammo Hung gives Nic some basic techniques of the Wing Chun kung fu, and CG man on title background is Phil's motion capture.
But on the film, there are not so many sequence that Phil uses Wing Chun kung fu clearly. ...Oh well, the hero is Nic...
There is the sequence that Phil does training-partner of Nic, on latter part of a story.
At first on this sequence, Phil uses Choy Lay Fut kung fu, and ... Phil is got a very big smile on the shot that he's taking to gird... why are you smiling so big,Phil?? Maybe you are very happy to do a martial arts sequence with Nic, your friend...
After Nic blocks Phil's Choy Lay Fut,(oh well, the hero is Nic...)(You said it twice.)..... Yes! Phil takes to gird of Wing Chun kung fu!
...I feel sorry for Nic on this sequence. ( lol )
coz Nic is not a martial artist, he is an actor who is martial arts freak, so it's natural...Nic's action pales compared to Phil's .
Just take to gird, Phil looks stronger than Nic. (lol) The line of Phil's forearm to end of the finger is perfect! Really beautiful.
And go on, they start to move, Phil goes looking more strong...(lol)
The scene just after that, the camera is fixed and it can be followed that their series of movements from first to end. Even though Phil moves very fast and much, his center axis of body is never wobbly, the position of his waist is same level, he almost never does vertical movement. Watch in slow motion play, Nic's body goes always up and down during offense and defense. so it can be realized easily which person is an adept...
Phil, why didn't you act a bit lowbie for Nic? (lol)
BTW, it has nothing to do with that, the watermelons they eat after the training look really tasty... they eat them with keen relish... is that acting? or real? It's probably, they deliberately mistook their dialogue and got many takes again and again to eat lots of watermelons... (lol)
And...the shot that Phil walks along on the sequence that Phil goes to someone (this name is a big spoiler so I cannot say...) to say "Is this a thing for which you hope?!", the appearance of Phil is very cool! ...surprisingly... (why do you choose such a short shot...)(That's just the way it is. I love it!)
Phil gave this entry his own comment:
also, one my favorite scenes (that I had done in the series) was in a later episode (around 30-something※) where I had to fight off Sammy Hung's character and his henchmen at a funeral (this scene was cut short in some China releases but was broadcasted in Hong Kong and has also been retained in most of the DVD releases)
