Hailing from the misty mountains of Nepal, Sanjeev Gurung, who has been described as'a Nepalese answer to Bruce Springsteen with the angst of Bob Dylan', started off performing as a solo acoustic act, until he decided to form a full band ' Quasar ' in early 2008 to maximize the impact of his epic stories and soaring melodies with Ben Bair, followed by Rob Mills who was on and off the show to continue his studies in NZ.
The band’s ethnic diversity and personal music tastes form a surprising coherence that celebrates both Eastern and Western music. Despite full time jobs, families and fans more used to irony than sincerity in popular music, Quasar gradually fused together rock styles from the 60's through present to form their own combustible brand of‘Revolutionary Rock'.
The principal song writer of Quasar, Sanjeev’s voice is the backbone of this blend. His soaring melodies salute his upbringing and identify with the politics of his homeland. Listen to 'Let the Peace Bells Chime' and you will understand where he's coming from. After the final battle of the bands in 2009, Quasar gained more public attention, thanks to an interview and some radio air play on RTHK, which resulted to a record and release of their two songs in mid 2009 on The Underground HK Compilation CD # 2 Straight Ahead. Back to Roots.
From the streets of Hong Kong to the big platform ,Quasar has performed under several banners like , Music Matters Asia 2009 & 2010,Lan Kwai Fong HK Music and Beer Fest 2009,2010,2011 & 2012,Lan Kwai Fong Chengdu Music and Beer Fest 2011 , Various showcases of UndergroundHK , Listen Up !,BC Magazine Unplugged, Silvermine Bay Music Fest 2010 and HKU Music Club Gig 2013 to name some. Throughout their musical journey, several members joined and departed, while some guest musicians helped Quasar continue their Walk of Rock.
With the comeback of Rob Mills, the former Lead Guitarist of the band, in late 2012,Quasar got hooked up with the Multi Instrumentalist – Koya Hizakazu on Drums and Calvin Wong on Bass. Performance wise, it is clear that the bands musical ability is of high standard. They are not the head banger / jump around type, but their reserved stage presence allows the listener to focus on the content of the deep lyrics and well crafted melodies.
