I'm on this site because there are a few friends here who aren't on any other network, who've invited me to keep tracks of them via here. this site is useful for this reason.
however, it is really dumb and patronizing at the same time. it creates this arbitrary array of "stars" who are really just rich kids with average talent and a lot of connections. whenever I wanna check my status or whatever, I must stare at their important news from their important blogs. I saw that kid Daniel Wu in a few movies and he is probably a good guy who is going to heaven, but I also have to say that most of my friends are more talented than him. Some of my friends are way more talented than him, some of them are like me, only slightly more talented or charismatic or original, than this guy. However, I have to read about what he eats for dinner or whom he eats dinner with every time I log on. I've read celebrity blogs before. Moon Lee has a fantastic blog, but most of the ones I've read here from the "stars" don't sound entirely voluntary. A few of them lack personality and really seemed like they were pushed to do it by their agents or all ghostwritten by one person.
Which makes this site a little bit confusing, because I thought it strives to connect people with other people, but instead, all I see is this self-imposed "star" status amongst the creators of this place and their friends. I wouldn't have too much problem either, if these people were actual accomplished professionals. Jessica Alba is on Myspace. But most of these people seem like middle class, hard-working folks with dreams, sounding and looking not too different from my buddy's garage band or my neighbor's head shot. This arbitrary label of certain people as "artists" (which itself is a dated term that most self-respecting entertainers shy away from) and forcing others who are genuinely interested in their careers into the roles of star-chasers is not only tacky and patronizing, its business sense is also questionable.
It is obvious that this site is not all that interested in finding new talents or forging a lifelong friendship between Billie from Iowa and Josie Ho. I just wish it would carry about its business with a little more tact. I don't mind viewing whatever products, that's just part of the awful world that we live in, I might even be interested in buying these products' products (if I had a little bit of cash), though I do mind being treated like a teenager who can't tell the difference between Jet Li and some 30-year old who is still rapping about how rich he is (and pretends to be excited about it).
Whoa I didn't expect to go on for three paragraphs, I originally just wanted to say "this is stupid", but here we have it.
