yeah look at your watch and you'll understand why 八个字 means 40mins.. so basically 三個字 means 15mins, 九個字means 45mins and so on. but if it is 30mins, usually ppl say 半個鐘, no one say 六個字.
Sure... you can quote me. :) Who would you quote me to? :) Are you a journalist or writer? Something else that comes to mind is the Michael Moore film "Bowling for Columbine". He makes a point in the film how the media is about promoting fear. (fear of the unknown or different) This could be part of that... In the past 7 years I think the US and China have become very close. And I think that in this time a lot of fear has gone away (The American fear of the Chinese). I remember growing up in the 80's and fearing nuclear war with the Russians (aka "The communists"). We were taught that they were inherently evil... With USSR gone now, it basically leaves China as the last world communist world power... I think that this CNN guy is pulling on the old scare tactics used in the old days to describe our old enemies (a.k.a. communism). (After all, Americans are tired of being told to fear Al Queida & Bin Laden) Maybe we are tired because its not an enemy we can fight, since its an ideology not an army. So this guy decides to say some ill advised words to describe the Chinese government to re-kindle the fear of communism. But like I said before... the average American on the street (that I know ) really like the Chinese people and culture. There is an excitement on our side that we can now engage, and be exposed to Chinese culture. There is LESS fear of the unknown... Anyways. I hope that the Chinese people who were hurt by these statements, would not hate Americans or think that his words represent what we think.
oh wow - okay so I just watched the clip on youtube (The one with "goons" and "junk," right?). Okay - here's the situatioin. What is sad is this is becoming the mode of communication on American Television. Very aggressive, often insulting. It's terrible, but it's just how people are starting to communicate. Our television is filled with it. It's interesting that this commentator brings it to his world perspective and then a reality check happens.
What's sad is that if this guy has any valid point of view t's lost in all his negativity. It sounds like he has some ulterior motive more than anything else though because he's touching hot point issues like "lead paint" - things American people have heard of and fear.
I wonder if we could get a reasonable spoken politician back in the white house (like Obama) if our News commentators might take a cue. Anyway - lots of stupid stuff is said like this all the time and while it's lame and unfortunte, other countries have to understand that we have a deep belief in freedom of speach and a commentator is just that. A single person who expresses an opinion... And we try not to shut anyone's opinion down - or our own opinion might be next. So... we let all opinions no matter how rude or annoying or banal be spoken aloud. Doesn't mean anyone but that one person agrees.
MAN... I heard that story too!! I first want to say on behalf of America... I am sorry that he said what he said. Unfortunately American journalism tends to use shocking words to try to jolt people to get attention (usually to the reporter). So in that he was very successful. But for what it is worth, I do not believe he was speaking about the Chinese people. I think he was referring to the government. But if you hold his statements up to his own measure, he should be calling American politicians and presidents Goons and thugs too. Its just in that situation, he must agree with the politics involved (i.e. Iraq invasion). So yeah... To answer your question to me... I think he chose the wrong words... and he insulted many people. For someone who is paid to be in the limelight and report NEWS... he should know better. And REPORT the news, not become the news. So I am sorry that you were offended... Please do not judge America by his words. The majority of the people I know are confused about the Tibet issue in regards to the Olympic issue. But I think that the two are seperate. The games should bring unity and a sense of coorporation and pride to all. Tibet I think should be "freed", but more like Hong Kong... an SAR... (then again I think Iraq should be freed too! So really our governments are the same...
Well... to answer your questions.... I judge all individuals by their individual actions not anything else - because nothing is is true. About CNN, I don't have a TV, so I have no idea what happened there... sounds bad?
