So I’d been wanting to see Across the Universe since I saw the movie posters for it back when it was out in theaters. I finally watched it and I can’t get it out of my head! 33 Beatles songs! Anyway, I think it was a pretty awesome film with so many stylistically different musical scenes. Some of them were pretty bizarre and like “wth” am I tripping on drugs, too? Haha. I liked it.
Speaking of musicals, I must be in musical mode. I watched Sweeney Todd last night. Very, very interesting. I’m not so sure I liked it although the cinematography, costumes, makeup, etc. were amazing.
Now, if only I could sing!!! I would LOVE to be in a musical. SIGH.
Flashback to high school: I used to go see the school musical every year. A lot of my friends were part of the production and so I went to support ‘em. At the same time, I secretly desired to be a part of the musical… but… the one time I attempted to go to an audition, I totally chickened out!
Flashback to elementary school: Back then, we were forced to all participate in the school musical. I played a mermaid one time for our version of Peter Pan. I’m pretty sure I had a lot of fun doing it…
So what happened? Grr. Why did I get all chicken in high school?
Oh wait, I know. I think it was hammered into my brain that I needed to focus on studying. Plus, I was never allowed out of the house besides going to school and school-related things. SIGH. I’m sure there are many of you fellow 2nd-generation Asian American peeps who can relate.
What the. Didn’t realize this was going to become a rant about my upbringing. Haha.
I’ll just leave it at that. I guess fast forward to now: I am def at a different place (although it is very unlikely I will ever sing in a musical). But, I am super thankful for where I’m at now! Definitely feelin’ the love from above!
P.S. - I recently signed up for Netflix, thus the sudden viewing of movies, haha. It’s pretty awesome. Lovin’ the online streaming!
My two cents: why a White guy and an Asian girl? Most likely somebody in marketing’s idea. From what I gathered, they were trying to make it “modern”… interracial couple, man cooking for woman… something like that. The same exact story could’ve been told with an Asian guy. Totally. If it were up to me, I would’ve casted an Asian guy + White girl. But until more politically conscious peeps write things differently…
I personally didn’t and don’t find anything wrong with the commercial. If you disagree, well, then, please be the one to write things differently and I’ll support you all the way (as long as it’s not Kenneth Eng style).
Anyway, political stuff aside, a lot of the comments and blogs totally cracked me up. I was definitely questioning the onion rings dipped in pork belly and soy sauce juice, too… lol.
For those of you who have yet to register to be a bone marrow donor, it’s just gotten easier! You can register online. More info from A3M:
In spirit of March Madness, Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches is starting a small campaign called Marrow March Madness in hope to increase the registrant pool through a new method: the online way.
Each year thousands of patients are searching for their one life-saving match. They depend on people like you to register as marrow donors and potentially save their life. HLA typing matches depend heavily on ethnic background so your registration will help someone of your own ethnic community.
HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE:
1. http://marrow.org/HELP/Join_the_Donor_Registry/Join_Now/join_now.html
2. Enter this promo code when asked: CTFHOPE03 (03 as in zero three)
*Entering the code enables you to waive the HLA typing fee of $52 that they normally charge… registering is FREE! **Code expires at 11:59pm March 31, 2009
(should you be reading this blog post after that date, just change the end of the code to read 04 which stands for April and so forth)
3. Wait for cheek swab kits to come in mail
4. Swab yourself, mail it back.
Once you’ve registered, you’ll only be contacted should you show up as a match. Otherwise you’ll just remain on the registry in peace until you’re 61, which is when you’ll be automatically removed.
Starts tomorrow! And I wish I could go up for it! Grr.
Anyway, just wanted to let all you SF peeps know that the “Words That Define” music video I worked on a few months ago will be premiering at a FREE outdoor film fest event this coming Saturday, March 14 at 7:20pm in the Japantown Peace Plaza. More info here.
Still from “Words That Define” directed by Chris Chan Lee for Big Phony.
So here’s a random mini fun project I was involved with recently. Directed by Alfred Hsing (kind of, cuz’ he wasn’t present for the whole thing :P) in collaboration with Lina Okazaki, Leonard Xu, and Nicole Mayeda.
The sad thing is… I actually think I look better after even though I’m supposed to look worse. Is that kinda twisted? Haha.

FAQ: Why "Peachies"?
"Peachies" was a nickname given to Grace in her freshman year of high school because she would always carry a bag of Trolli gummy peach rings with her (back then, the candy was called "Peachies"... they are now "Peachie-O's" or something like that). The nickname stuck and Grace started using it as her username for various online sites (AsianAvenue, Findapix, Xanga, Myspace, etc.)
Today, most of her friends in the "industry" know her as "Peachies" as well.
And coincidentally, Grace's Chinese name is Pei-Chi!
