  • The crust is the best part, imo

Why can't kids eat sandwiches with the crust on? Why so picky?

Whenever I had a sandwich for lunch when I was little, I'd eat all the bread including the crust. It's part of the bread - the 2nd best part. Didn't make sense to be wasteful.

I didn't eat a lot of sandwiches as I usually had a hot lunch because it was free for me. Consequently, I eventually stopped eating those school lunches, or occasionally brought my own little icky lunch, because....I was embarrassed about getting free lunches. Being a tween and worrying about what others thought....

I can still remember my first ever lunch at first grade. Daddy packed me a tuna and white bread sandwich and liberally doused it with Catalina salad dressing. What's
    Catalina  dressing? Ah, it's orange.

I'm sitting at a bench in the 1st-grade yard when I pulled my sandwich bag out of the brown paper bag. I was mortified to see that the dressing had soaked half the bread. I suspected to others my lunch looked pretty disgusting - something orange! I recall using all my fingers to hold the sandwich (still in the clear bag) in such a way (fingers together) so as to cover up the dressing mess. Hah! Traumatized forever.

Back to the present...and back to crusts...
When I make sandwiches for school lunches, I leave half the crust on and half off. That's my compromise.

I save the crust and snack on it later. Waste not, want not.

I still use dressing on my tuna sandwiches. I
generously douse it with Thousand Island dressing now.

I didn't like crusts when I was a kid, too dry and chewy it was an effort to eat them.
    Now I do of course.

Must admit that right up until my late teens I wouldn't eat the crust, now I quite like it, especially when toasted.

Here too, there was a stigma with free lunches at school. My friend was teased dreadfully. Kids can be so cruel.

    Nothing wrong with crust..

I find them sat on plates where my colleagues once sat to eat their breakfast.. I think it's a bit of a waste..

I wonder if it has more nutritional properties than the bread itself? It would be interesting if it did.. then, maybe we can save the crust ! :D

    love bread .... love crust!

make me feel down talking bread at the moment .... trying to cut down on carbs to lose the flab ...... no rice, noodles, pasta, pots or pumpkins ...... just bananas!

crust has had a bad rap ..... all the hk cafes cut-off the crust for sandwiches, which is a waste ... but it's considered "unclassy" to be like eating crust i suppose ........  unless u tell them 娄边 when u order, it's standard practice to eat bald sandwiches :oP

I used to save the crust and feed it to the ducks at the park. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the crust.

Never a big fan of crust on loaf bread myself. It's okay when toasted but I don't like it out of the package. I've been having a slice of bread with almond butter for breakfast all this week and I peel off the entire crust before I even lay on my spread.

I eat the crust... always have... =) nothing wrong with it... I also eat the crust off the pizza! haha... you know I've seen crustless bread for sale... I think it might Sheng Kee that does it.

yea, I used to bring lunch to school. actually all the way thru college too. It was the best way to save money. haha... and yea, I've had my share of "trying to hide" my lunch b/c it looked "weird" hahaa... the free lunch at school just wasn't for me... hahaa...

lol I remember being told that back when I first went to school. I hated the lunches, it just looked weird to me and it was nasty to me. I sat there and cussed out the principle and teacher who "wanted" to "Make" me eat the hot lunch. Of course it was in Cantonese...lol lucky me.

I don't recall that ever happening, though my parents and sisters say I did it.

Chinese dishes are just more appetizing to me. =p

    mines easier than that...

Tuna...thats it, right out of the can.

if it's got to be a sandwhich then it's usually just

tuna...bread.  Sometimes mayo.  And if I'm feeling luxurious then add the apple dices.

We were made to feel guilty til the end of days if we didn't eat every scrape of food on our plates which didn't make sense because the children in Africa were still starving.....so, I like crust because it's part of the whole BREAD EXPERIENCE!!!!  Sourdough bread crust can be quite satisfying!

Isn't it odd how some things from our childhood stick with us?  Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it causes anxiety to remember so clearly our youngest impressions....

My tuna sandwich is easy:  tuna fish, mayo, relish...mix together.  On the sandwich, add lettuce!  =D
