After the first order of business (Chihuly exhibit) was taken care of, I roamed the rest of the de Young. The new building is brighter and certainly roomier. It also doesn't have the musty smell of the old building. It seems the de Young Museum has much more modern stuff than I remembered them housing. Must be new stuff.
On the main floor, you will see this huge thing. It looks like a basket weave pattern.

"Bringing the Rats to the Man." This is a 3-D piece - parts protrude. Poor Mickey - he's not a rat!

I like shiny.

Pieces of what appear to be burnt wood suspended in an orderly fashion from the ceiling.

Paper clowns.

Glass woman. Like some of the marble statues, this piece captures the movement of the dress exceptionally well with the folds, the ruches, the drape...everything. Definitely my favorite piece.

A Chihuly venetian.

A large platter of favorite fruit. The pear's the size of my little girl. There's a peach on the other side.

Glass dress. Also check out the painting directly behind the bench - it incorporates a sun halo. Ooh.

"Sweet Things." Looks like jewelry and pearls.

Here's a putti - the baby figure - on this Chihuly venetian. Its right leg is somewhat unformed?

Chiura Obata's "Mother Earth." She's like the Asian horror figure we know and love.

I'm so glad I finally made it out to the new museum. Even though it no longer has the charm of being in the hallowed halls of a neo-classical, historic structure (with marble and parquet flooring, crown moldings, grand staircases, and claustrophobic rooms - all ready to crumble at the slightest earthquake), its bright and spacious surroundings, and long, open galleries, invite you to stay and take it all in leisurely.
Not sure if Mr. P delighted in this trip to the museum as much as I. He hardly said a word about the works while we were there. Though he didn't utter one negative word, the vibe wasn't right. At least he voluntarily tagged along which takes the sting out of what I were to feel had I dragged him along.
